Tragedy and mental illness have been dark companions of Rae Newborn for more than 50 years. Her life seems to start rebuilding itself, though, when she moves to a deserted island to restore the house her mysterious great-uncle built in the 1920s. But Rae senses powerful forces stirring on the island. Is the skin-crawling feeling she has of someone watching her only in her mind, or has something disturbingly real taken notice of Rae?

This book was a big disappointment. It's a very slow moving story. I kept hoping for a big pay off at the end, but it too was not worth the wait. Also, the narrator had a very annoying reading style, ending nearly every sentence with a breathy whisper that got real old very fast. I will certainly avoid this author and narrator in the future.

PECCAVI. The Latin word is scrawled in blood at the scene of a young woman's brutal murder: I HAVE SINNED. It's a chilling Christmas greeting for Boston medical examiner Maura Isles and Detective Jane Rizzoli, who swiftly link the victim to controversial celebrity psychiatrist Joyce O'Donnell, Jane's professional nemesis and member of a sinister cabal called the Mephisto Club.

    "Great story, Disapointing Narrrator"
    Overall

The narrator was a big disapointment but the story was great. The narrator did not have the ability to change her voice to play the various characters in the book. As a result, I fould myself rewinding much of the time to keep track of which character was speaking. A poor narrator can ruin and otherwise great book.

Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is universally regarded as one of literature's finest achievements, as the great Russian novelist explores the inner workings of a troubled intellectual. Raskolnikov, a nihilistic young man in the midst of a spiritual crisis, makes the fateful decision to murder a cruel pawnbroker, justifying his actions by relying on science and reason, and creating his own morality system. Dehumanized yet sympathetic, exhausted yet hopeful, Raskolnikov represents the best and worst elements of modern intellectualism. The aftermath of his crime and Petrovich's murder investigation result in an utterly compelling, truly unforgettable cat-and-mouse game. This stunning dramatization of Dostoevsky's magnum opus brings the slums of St. Petersburg and the demons of Raskolnikov's tortured mind vividly to life.

    "Not easy to listen to"
    Overall

I feel slightly different than the other listeners here. First, yes this is a great story and narrated by the best. That being said, I found it to be difficult to listen to at times and kept thinking, when will it ever end? I'm not saying don't listen but I am saying, don't think for one minute this is a light "read". Listening to this one feels like heavy work at times.
