  • The Moment of 'Psycho': How Alfred Hitchcock Taught America to Love Murder

It was made like a television movie, and completed in less than three months. It killed off its star in 40 minutes. There was no happy ending. And it offered the most violent scene to that date in American film, punctuated by shrieking strings that seared the national consciousness. Nothing like Psycho had existed before, and the movie industry, even America itself, would never be the same.

Interesting analysis of Psycho, that not only goes into great detail about the specifics of the film, but also the impact it had of filmmaking more broadly. The narration is strong and engaging. Listened to the full 3.5 hours in one sitting and was never bored (though it does meander near the end... sort of like Psycho.)

In this mixture of cultural and social history that is both scholarly and vastly entertaining, Eyman dispels the myths and gives us the missing chapter in the history of Hollywood, the ribbon of dreams by which America conquered the world.

"Facinating look at an overlooked period in film"
    Overall

Fascinating look into a period of film that is all-too-often ignored. Eyman really brings the world to life with lots of memorable characters and anecdotes.

    The narration is great, too.

When movies cost hundreds of millions to make and market, the magnitude of the wagers is astonishing. Vast riches rain down on those who gamble wisely, and careers are made and lost in one weekend. But never is this box-office race more feverish than during the summer blockbuster season, when the studios roll out their most expensive, effects-laden pictures in a feverish race to win the box-office derby. Peter Bart here brings us a marvelously entertaining behind-the-scenes portrait of moviemaking.

    "Intersting book... horrible reader."
    Overall

The worst reader I've heard from anything I've downloaded off Audible. Not only did he mispronounce a number of the names (Jet Li = Lie, Warren Beatty = Beetty) but even common words get butchered, and a few times titles of the films are said wrong (all I can remember is "6 Days, 7 Weeks" at the moment, but there were others.)

Really an irritating experience. Though the book is fairly interesting.
