Ever since he saved Dr. Mackenzie Grant's life, panther, shifter, and sorcerer Kalen Black has had trouble keeping the beautiful doctor out of his thoughts and his heart. The brush with death awakened an intense passion between them - one that for the first time had the notorious loner letting down his guard. With the Alpha Pack battling an evil Fae who is slowly gaining control over Kalen's mind, Kalen can no longer trust his own actions, and he breaks off his affair with Mackenzie in order to keep her safe. But when Mackenzie learns that she is carrying Kalen's child, no amount of danger will keep her away from the man she loves.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Not much, to be honest. I listened the whole way through simply because I'd invested so much time in the other stories already. I spent most of my listening experience rolling my eyes and watching the timer count down.

What could J. D. Tyler have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Backing off on the campy, hokey dialog would have gone a long way towards improving the story. It just wasn't as strong as the first two books. I get that Kalen's growing sense of distance from the pack means there wasn't the same opportunity for the usual banter and wit that I enjoyed in the other stories, but this was just too much. Every time Malik opened his mouth I kept thinking, "it can't possibly get worse...". But it did. Hard to react appropriately to a bad guy's actions when you can't keep a straight face.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kirsten Potter’s performances?

Yes. I really like Kirsten Potter in general but didn't care for this one at all. It was over the top, which was made all the worse by campy, predictable dialog.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Definitely disappointment. I loved the first two books! This one just fell way, way short. I hope the next one is better. One not so great book definitely isn't enough to throw me off a series, narrator or author I otherwise really enjoy.

After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad - because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard. He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long.

Would you listen to Cold Days again? Why?

I only discovered Jim Butcher's Dresden Files ten months ago, but since then I've fallen totally in love with the series. I've listened through it all leading up to Cold Days twice, and I was so completely thrilled with the newest addition that I am DEFINITELY listening to it again!! Cold Days took me through a whole range of emotions and reactions. I got chills, I cried, I sat (quite literally) on the edge of my seat, even laughed. It's an amazing follow up to Ghost Story, WONDERFULLY written and narrated. I can't even begin to express how happy I am that James Marsters is back in the role of narrator. He voices Harry and the new path he's found himself on beautifully. Jim Butcher totally blew me away with this one. Again.

What about James Marsters’s performance did you like?

The way he voiced Harry in the beginning when Harry's whole world had been turned upside down versus the way he voiced him once Harry was back on familiar ground contributed to the overall tone of the story in such a fabulous manner. I spent the first several chapters of the book feeling edgy, just like Harry, and I know that's partially due to Jim Butcher's writing, and partially because of the way James was narrating it. Loved that.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I thought I could have listened for 18+ hours straight, I totally would have. As it is, I devoured it - stayed up late, lost sleep, ignored my friends and family - until I was finished. Except for those last two hours. I had to stop and take a break simply because I didn't want it to end!
