I almost didn't download this book because of the extensive negative reviews on the narrator, but luckily I didn’t let those reviews deter me and I am so thankful for that. This book is hard to walk away from, if I could I would have listened to it straight through to the end. The narrator, for me at least, was very good. Some of her male voices were a little strained, but I find that common with female narrators. With any amount of imagination you should be able to listen to this book and get submerged into its horrible and remarkable storyline. I would 100% recommend this to someone.
This book was more raw than I expected, some of the events that happened were so horrific that they were almost hard to listen to. As I listened to it I just couldn't help but marvel that this is based on a real story, what a strong woman! The narrator did a great job with the voices, especially an Irish woman's voice. I loved everything about it and would recommend it to anyone interested in a woman's struggle for freedom and respect.
I really liked this book and the narrator. I enjoy a story where the main character is neither good nor bad, black or white, but grey. Callis' struggles between good and crazy and the ending (no spoiler) was sad, but really the best way to end this type of story. The preppy girls were a bit stereotypical and some of the situations a bit extreme, I think the writer wanted to imply that Callis draws in the extreme, but they didn't really get into that. I don't remember if this was a young reader book or not, but there is some language and some graphic material and I am not sure how young would be ok to read it, I guess I read Flowers in the Attic when I was young and I am only mildly scared for life!
What a fun and creative story! The narration was perfect and it threw me into the depths of this amazing world without as much as a bump in the road. Not to give too much away, but the love story is one for the ages. I felt the pace of the story was perfect and the descriptions or the circus were well suited for the imagination. It is a bit heavy for young readers, I am not sure what a good age would be to read this, but for adults this is a must read (listen).
This series is amazing! I know it is young reader, but I just couldn't help myself. Even though these were written with a younger audience in mind I very much think that the story should be read by adults. I was entertained through and through. The world and the story are so fantastic! The narrator did an amazing job. Now that I've listened to all of the books I am a bit sad that they are over. I would and have recommended these books for young adult and adults young at heart.
This book is so poorly composed, the writing is terrible! If I have to hear "My inner goddess" one more time I think I'll flip out. This overreaching soft core porn novel is overshadowed by any romance novel you can pick up in paperback. I am so tired of the "powerful" woman character that isn't powerful at all. Anastasia is everything I dislike about woman characters, seemingly intelligent yet drops everything for a handsome man. Here he is, suggesting horrible things and she thinks it's ok because of his handsome face. Sigh. Maybe the other books redeem her character, but there is no way I would ever spend my time listening to this back and forth romance of two people I could care less about. Maybe if it was written better, leave out some of the inner goddess BS and make her character have a bit more depth beyond "Oh my, he wants me?" and "don't buy me things, I am not a prostitute". The same dialog over and over and over. The sex scenes were ok and as any roman novel reader will attest to those are important, but the story supporting the sex scenes was just so annoying and felt very "high-schoolish". The narrator did a good job, I am having a hard time giving them good marks simply because it was so difficult to listen to the dialog. I do not recommend this book and I am not sure why it has so much popularity.
I enjoyed listening to these between breaks listing to other bigger books. I thought the narration was fun and enjoyed the way the stories were read very much. I do not like all of the Grimm Tales and most of them I think I've heard one place or another, but the narration and the new twist on an old classic has made this a recommend.
I am an avid reader of anything Stephen King, not that I like all of his work, but I do like most of it. For some reason I wasn't interested in the premise of the book, it seemed to fluffy or something. In any case I gave it a chance, is it the best Stephen Kig book, no, but I am glad that I listened to it.
What I found most fascinating was the little fact tidbits that one wouldn’t normally think of, like the smell of the 1950s due to a lack of regulation on car emissions and factories. I like the tiny details in this book and the overlying plot was something that kept me going from chapter to chapter.
The love story became a bit daunting a times, but the ending of the book made those lulls worthwhile. Most importantly I think it ended well, which is always a little nerve racking with these types of stories. I liked the characters and the narration of these characters and I enjoyed where they all ended up at the end of the story.
I will not get too wordy with my review. The story is very unique and haunting. There are a few scenes in the story that are eerie and I knew where it was going, but couldn't stop listening.
At first the narration seemed a little too yelled instead of spoken, but after a few minutes I was so enthralled with the story that the narration no longer bothered me.
Overall I would recommend this story to anyone that likes post apocalypse tales about a government gone sour and heroes in unlikely places.
All I can say is wow, what a gruesome and grotesque story. I loved it, so unique and captivating. When it ended I just sat there for a minute and contemplated what had just happened. I am not the world’s biggest zombie aficionado, but this perspective and the performances - whew - amazing. Props goes to all the men and women who read the story, it must have been quite the undertaking. This book is not recommended for the queasy. VERY graphic VERY sadistic VERY explicit.
I found the synopsis of the story to be very intriguing and I did enjoy the narration, however towards the last ¼ of the book I was bored with it. I didn’t care what happened to the characters and just wanted whatever was going to happen to happen so I could listen to something else. I think the satire was very fun and enjoyed the back and forth that the characters had with each other. I would say that if you have credits to burn, try this story, maybe you will enjoy it all the way to the end, however I wouldn’t waste any extra money on it and I would not recommend to a friend.
