The Overlords appeared suddenly over every city - intellectually, technologically, and militarily superior to humankind. Benevolent, they made few demands: unify earth, eliminate poverty, and end war. With little rebellion, humankind agreed, and a golden age began.

"Great book, reader is pretty dull."
    Overall

This reader often sounds like a synthesized computer voice. In fact, he sounds exactly like the voice on the AT&T Labs "Natural Voices" website where you can type in something and hear different computer voices read what you have typed. Is this reader actually the "Mike...US English" computer voice? I thought the dialogue was okay, but I had trouble concentrating during the expository sections of the text due to the dullness of the voice.

Lise Adams is a young woman attempting to uncover the mystery of her father's disappearance 10 years earlier. Turk Findley is an ex-sailor and sometimes-drifter. They come together when an infall of cometary dust seeds the planet with tiny remnant Hypothetical machines. Soon, this seemingly hospitable world will become very alien indeed - as the nature of time is once again twisted, by entities unknown.

"Not really "Spin 2" but I found it worthwhile"
    Overall

If you want to read about the continuing life stories of the characters from "Spin" you are mostly out of luck. This one explores some of the IDEAS presented in the first book and takes the reader into the world beyond the arch - a place both mundane and fantastic. As in "Spin," big weird stuff happens in the sky - an image which I always find compelling. Also as in "Spin," plenty is left unexplained. I have come to love Scott Brick's narrations, and he does a fine job here. I'll say what someone else said in their review as well - it is much better than most science fiction out there.

In a cave high in the Alps, a renegade anthropologist discovers a frozen Neanderthal couple with a Homo sapiens baby. Meanwhile, in southern Russia, the U.N. investigation of a mysterious mass grave is cut short. One of the investigators, molecular biologist Kaye Lang, returns home to the U.S. to learn that her theory on human retroviruses has been verified with the discovery of SHEVA, a virus that has slept in our DNA for millions of years and is now waking up.

Paul Krasner says: "Really good science fiction"
    "Pretty good"
    Overall

I thought this was worth a credit. I listened to it a month or so back, and don't actually remember that much about it. The fact that I've forgotten most of it means that there was nothing outstanding about it either positive or negative. I would buy another title from this author if I didn't have anything else on my wish list to try. My overall impression is positive, but not thrilled or inspired. I don't have a critique of the science, which to this laywoman seemed plausible enough. I have to comment that the audio sample offered is from the beginning of the book and represents a section where the author - in the voice of a somewhat cynical character - describes a woman's qualities primarily in terms of her attractiveness and sexual performance. I remember finding that particular passage irritating and almost stopping the program when I heard it. I am glad I stuck with it though, because the point of view of the story isn't solely from that character's point of view, and the author did not seem to share his character's cynicism.

An orphan's life is harsh---and often short---in the island city of Camorr, built on the ruins of a mysterious alien race. But born with a quick wit and a gift for thieving, Locke Lamora has dodged both death and slavery, only to fall into the hands of an eyeless priest known as Chains---a man who is neither blind nor a priest. A con artist of extraordinary talent, Chains passes his skills on to his carefully selected "family" of orphans---a group known as the Gentlemen Bastards.

    "Best Audible experience so far!"
    Overall

I found this an enjoyable and well written adventure with a significant adult appeal (thieves have quite a blue sense of humor!) The style is well suited to being read aloud and the reader does a nice job. I listen to hours of audiobooks at work and I can say I enjoyed this so much more than other fantasy titles I've heard so far. (I'm presently enduring George R.R. Martin's clunky prose for hours at a time, wishing I'd gotten more Scott Lynch instead.)
