L. Kirkman

This was a great listen. A good vehicle showing how making choices can have both really great and really sad outcomes at one and the same time. I highly recommend this novel --- makes you think and sticks with you afterwards.

Since this is from Harlequin I shouldn't have been surprised that this is a love story. Starts out sounding more intellectual but the main character tends to get a bit annoying with her "what is wrong with me, why can't I think straight" stuff when you know it's all romance in hiding. It would have been better as either a straight out mystery or a straight out romance. Although the story was pretty good the two mixed together got in the way of really enjoying the novel. I don't think guys would like this that much even if it is about submarines (which is what got my interest to start with too).

This is the second or third of her books I've bought on Audible and I will watch for more from her. Her stories are intellectually engaging and she has good character development. I have always been an Anglophile when it comes to novels and she is right up my alley.

The narrator's voice is grating and the story is to convoluted with the weird names of people and places. Between the two I can't listen to this anymore. I've only listened to less than an hour of it. Glad I bought it on sale!

I only found Charles De Lint a couple months ago on audio and I'm quite hooked. I like the worlds he creates and magic his characters discover. If you like fantasy novels you will enjoy this one.

I didn't recognized until I had been listening that this is a follow up to "A Hat Full of Sky" which was aimed at young adults (as the protagonist is only 16). But like all Terry Pratchett novels it is quite fun and full of interesting characters and his rather fun quirky takes on "what everyone knows." Very enjoyable..

The story is predictable and uses ideas from other fantasy novels that are highly recognizable. But the worst part is the narrator. She sounds like she has a stick up her spine. Much too high and mighty a tone for the story line. I am not sure I will be able to finish listening to this as her voice is very irritating.

These two stories were well written and the readers were quite good. The world the authors created is intriguing and would make a good setting for a longer novel. The only quibble I have was that it was a little unsatisfying that the two stories didn't tie into each other and the first one had such a pessimistic outcome. It would have been fun to see what would happen if the two protagonists met.

The story is okay but the narrator is exceedingly annoying. His rendition of female and children's voices is just awful, I cringe every time a woman or child is talking. It would have been MUCH more enjoyable if it had two voices, one for the men and one for the women and children instead of the single one it has. I wouldn't recommend any book by this narrator.
