I can't wait for the next installment. Ken Follett does such a great job with these massive historical books. I was hesitant when I read some of the reviews that said he had phoned it in. He didn't. This book is worth all the time it will take you to read it.
I love Dan Brown, so I was eager to read Inferno. Got it the first day it was out. It's a good read, but falls short of DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons. This one felt like there was just too much chasing and not enough of the historical stuff that sets his books apart. Would I still recommend it? Yes, just with slightly lower expectations.
I like Clancy and have been jumping around in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The usual good character development and tight plotting. Scott Brick is, hands down, the best Clancy narrator. I've waded through some of the others and truly, there is no comparison. I'd consider reading anything that he has narrated.
Good plot. Well drawn characters. The story moves along pretty quickly and kept me engaged.
I usually like a book that I can't predict what's going to happen next, but this one was over the top. Too many twists and turns. I still liked the story, but I didn't like all the red herrings and questions I had about who was or wasn't a good guy.
Maybe I was distracted, but I tried to get into this book. Tried but failed. Maybe I'll come back to it when I'm stuck somewhere and have used all my credits. Probably not, though.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed this book, but I would have enjoyed at least as much if an editor would have said, "Stephen, it rambles a bit in places. Maybe you could cut about a third of it." Seriously, did this novel need to be as long as the LBJ biography or Ken Follet's latest? Short answer: No. That grumbling aside, I liked the story and the characters. Craig Wasson did a good job voicing it. So, I'd recommend it. When you read it, though, you might want to do what I ended up doing. I changed the speed to 1 1/2 x. :)
I enjoyed reading this book. The characterizations were well drawn, even for those of us who haven't read all the other books in the series. The pacing was tight. I like that in this kind of novel. The plot twists were also plausible. Finally, the narration was well done. Good distinctions between characters with the voices imparting meaning beyond the words.
It was a little slow getting started, but once it got moving it was super.
