These are real gems of SF. No, they are not the only gems, but gems nonetheless. However, the male narration is HORRIBLE. As another reader said: "The quality of the sound on the narration is poor and the most commonly used narrator has an almost robotic monotone voice." I wish I could specify which male narrator, but cannot. What a waste. Audible, please re-release this book with a competent narrator - please.
What a combination - Robert Heilein and Lloyd James! The plot was written many, many years ago (maybe 50s but probably 60s), but it is as fresh as today. Substitute the modern American middle class for Lunies and it is a chilling visionary tale.
But almost overshadowing the excellent plot and characters is the performance of Lloyd James. I have no idea what his real accented voice sounds like, but he was of recent Russian parentage for 13+ hours of the reading, as well as Chinese, French, professorial English, and many others. His was by far the best performance of any narrator I have heard on Audible. So good that I'm going to buy books he narrates regardless of subject matter!
What to think? Odd was at his best. Setting was ripe. All was in place; the runner had a clear shot at the goal line. Disaster - fumble on the two yard line! I would never accuse Mr Koontz of giving a novel to the kid down the street to finish. All is not lost however - Odd, Elvis, and Boo are off on another adventure.
Vassago (I heard Massago?) is the most singularly evil character I have encountered in a long while. Delicious. Carol Cowen's Regina was perfect. Last quarter of the book seemed to drag on a bit, and I was hoping for a more painful end for the villain.
This is the first Dan Brown book I have listened to, but have read all the print novels. Maybe that's why I much preferred "The Lost Symbol" to any of his other books.
Although I have read all the Odd Thomas books, this is the first I have listened to. David Aaron Baker is exactly the voice I thought Odd would have! Great fun.
Sookie Stackhouse novels are just plain fun.
This must be a children's or ESL book that I picked by mistake.
