I might read it, but I would not listen again, narrator was really very bad.
Interesting plot twists, and excellent Baddies.
Mispronounced words, awkward pauses in mid phrase, HORRIBLE Scottish accent.
I love this creation of greater depth in the universe, all those little things that make the characters come alive. Really enjoyed the short stories and the fun characters. Again very well written and entertaining.
Good but not great. The long pauses in narration got annoying. At one point I skipped about half an hour, and didn't notice. I hope that the author goes back to including science in the story. I liked the cultural references to Thailand but I miss the science.
Perhaps Savagely logical would have been a better headline for this. I simply loved new spin that the author has placed on an old story line. Entertaining and exciting, follows character development and character motivation to their logical ends. Use of language is delightful and sophisticated.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that likes gritty high science fiction, especially with a slight military bent.
Fun bit of Space Opera. Nice spin to have the ship be from the UK. Nicely flawed characters that overcome their problems and rise to the challenge. Slightly repetitive and predicable but still a fun listen. I will listen to the second one.
I was very hopeful that this book would be good, based on the other reviews. I even bought the second book and was looking forward to a new series. Unfortunately that was not to be. I found myself a few chapters in and hating the main character and not caring about anyone else. Narration was really quite bad.
The prologue was mildly interesting but confused, and the overly melodramatic way which flowed straight into the first chapter with no pause in narration but with a huge scene jump. The Cloak was BLUE! yes and? so apparently a blue cloak means something, I will never know. The child is wearing RED! everyone freaks out, except they didn't notice until they are in the presence of some guy in charge of something (very very unclear)
The setting is supposed to be a fantasy setting but the use of modern idioms and terms as well as concepts kept making me wonder what was going on. For Example, the main character lives in a run down shack, alone as a young child, no parent figure or apparent source of income. Yet he attends school, and the shack has a key and they spray graffiti on the walls, which is being cleaned off by a random janitor. These elements were so disparate that they broke the suspension of disbelief for me.
The book seriously felt like it should have been set in modern times as the author has no clue how to set something back in time or into a fantasy setting. The author obviously wants a high school student to be snubbed by the football team and he wants to be a SEAL or something, who gets magic powers. I might have been able to get through that story, but not this one.
I was very disappointed and really could not get through the first few chapters. I hope that the series gets Much better, I won't find out unfortunately.
This series makes me smile and I look forward to the next time I can listen. The characters are lifelike and charming in their coming of age blend of childlike wonder and growing adult knowledge of the world.
I normally don't notice the narration unless it is really bad, or simply Amazing. Katherine Kellgren is Phenomenal, changing the accent of the main character and keeping all the other characters straight, singing songs from the time period, and casting enough emotion into the voices that you can't help but empathize with the characters.
I Highly recommend this series, good clean adventure.
I picked this up as a whim, Serendipity smiled and this book was quite entertaining. Blending Fictional characters into a historical setting brilliantly done. While this book may have been aimed at the young adult audience I found it a delight. I would highly recommend this to any teenager especially a young lady with a rebellious streak.
The narration was amazing, the characters were distinct and the accents clear. A wonderful accompaniment to a great story.
I loved the Dresden books from the beginning, but here the characters really are fleshed out and active. Excellent emotional roller coaster, with lots of well described action.
I had never read the Doctor Dolittle books before. I realize that this book was written a long time ago when these sorts of attitudes might a have been more prevalent. I was expecting a child-like romp with animals and fun simple adventure. What I got was, racial condescension and blatant racism. I did not actually finish the book, I stopped when the black man was mocked and swindled as he attempted to emulate the white man and tried to change his color so that he could have what the white man has.
I do understand that the story was written in another time, but so was Alice in Wonderland. It was extolled as a wonderful children's novel. I would not want my child to read this book, perhaps the series gets better. I won't know.
So this review is written more as a warning to parents that thought that Dr. Dolittle would be a fun children's book. Read with caution and explanations in hand. Ironically this is not at all similar to the movies starring Eddy Murphy (a case where the movie is much better)
Very disappointed in a classic children's story.
Exploration of Non-standard Living things
The wide ranging series of science topics that were covered while talking about life.
The Narration was amazing, Mr. Martin's voice is very similar to Rod Sterling's so I kept expecting him to say "in the Twilight zone"
There were several time that I laughed out loud, but fascination was more a descriptor for my reaction
I keep up on weird topics like SETI and Extremeophiles so I expected this to be a fun but not terribly informative piece. I was wrong! The author covered the latest information and coverd it in a quick but concise manner that kept me amused while informing. Well done.
