  • Angela's Ashes

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Frank McCourt
    • Narrated By Frank McCourt

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Karen says: "A classic book *and* a classic audiobook"
    "Listening adds so much!"

I started to listen to the book, but then bought a paper copy half way through. (Sometimes you want re-read a section, tough to do on a MP3 player). I enjoyed the spoken version so much more, than if I had just read the book. The songs and pronunciations were lost on me on the page, but the audio version brought them to life.

  • I Am America (And So Can You!)

    • ABRIDGED (3 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Stephen Colbert
    • Narrated By Stephen Colbert

What The Daily Show is to evening news, The Colbert Report is to personality-driven pundit shows. Colbert brings his sarcastic charm to a half-hour report, tackling the important issues of the day and telling his guests why their opinions are just plain wrong. Stephen stands for "truthiness" and his American right to copyright that word and claim ownership of it. The author describes this as a simple audiobook from a simple mind: Stephen Colbert's.

    Ty says: "Funny, but disappointing."
    "Good in small doses"
    Any additional comments?

I like Stephen Colbert, but there is a reason his show on TV is only 30 minutes long. This book at 3.5 hours is too much Colbert, even for a fan.

  • A Fine Dark Line

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Joe R. Lansdale
    • Narrated By Dick Hill

For blissfully ignorant 13-year-old Stanley Mitchell, the end of innocence comes with his discovery of an old trove of passionate yet troubled love letters that lead him to a long-ago house fire and the tragic deaths of two very different young women. Obsessed with investigating their fates, Stanley finds a guide and mentor in black, elderly Buster Lighthouse Smith, a retired Indian Reservation policeman who now runs the projector at the drive-in theater owned by Stanley's parents.

This has the potential to be a good story, but is not. The writing is predictable. Don't waste your time.

  • Until I Find You: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (35 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By John Irving
    • Narrated By Arthur Morey
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When he is four years old, Jack travels with his mother Alice, a tattoo artist, to several North Sea ports in search of his father, William Burns. From Copenhagen to Amsterdam, William, a brilliant church organist and profligate womanizer, is always a step ahead, has always just departed in a wave of scandal, with a new tattoo somewhere on his body from a local master or "scratcher".

Katharina says: "Great story, annoyingly read"
    "Don't bother"

I am a John Irving fan. However, but like many writers, the themes from his first hits continue to resurface in following books, i.e., young man w/ bizarre childhood, wierd sexual experiences, wrestling, East coast prep-school....This book is WAY TOO LONG at 32 hours. I should have stopped about 28 hours ago :).
