Emily Pollifax is one of a precious few gray-haired female sleuths who solve their cases through unflagging determination, moral courage and wisdom that comes with age. In "The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax", Emily answers the call of that “nice Mr. Carstairs” to go to Istanbul as a courier and search for a missing agent.

I first met Mrs Polifax in a movie with the lead role played by Rosalind Russell. It was a fun romp of a movie so I decided to listen to one of Ms Gilmans books. Well let me say all the good things before I critisize. The story is still a fun romp , the reader is an excellent actress and reader. Each character is well defined and on target EXCEPT Mrs Polifax. The reader has made her sound like a Ninety year old creaky lady. I am a senior, my friends are seniors. We have nice mellow voices. Even the ones with naturally high pitched voices sound younger than Mrs Polifax. She sounds creaky and very old.. I'm not sure how else a reader could express her as older but maybe that is not necessary as it is explained so often in the story. Anyway it is a very fine story and as I said the reader is truly excellent and maybe if I didn't have Rosalind Russell as my model I would think she sounded just fine.

Catherine Ling is one of the CIA’s most prized operatives. Raised on the unforgiving streets of Hong Kong, she was pulled into the agency at the age of 14, already having accumulated more insight and secrets than the most seasoned professionals in her world. If life has taught her anything, it is not to get attached, but there are two exceptions to that rule: Her son, Luke, and her mentor, Hu Chang.

I listened to this much longer than I would have ordinarily. I liked the story line and hoped I could stand to listen long enough to hear the conclusion. I couldn't. This author wrote this story badly. First it is definitely a romance novel with a little adventure thrown in. Too much erotica and too little actual story. I think the romance could have been told with a lot less high drama. I felt like I was listening to a cheap soap opera. Like I said the idea of the story is fascinating but not enough to keep listening.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Like any good story teller Patrick Rothfuss in the voice of Cvoth captures and holds and makes us want to know "what comes next". This is a marvelous tale and the reading is perfect for the story. I loved it.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

MacKayla Lane's life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she's your perfectly ordinary 21st-century woman. Or so she thinks...until something extraordinary happens.

This story seems to be pretty interesting but with the southern accent of the reader and the juvinal descriptions of the lead characters hairdo and attire the whole thing just gets too tiresome to continue. I've tried twice because as I said the story is interesting. The long blond ponytail every other page and that awful accent. Just too much.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

    Overall

Everything about this audiobook is so good it almost spoils you for others. The story is captivating and well written. The reader is so good I am afraid others just may never come up to her abilities, although, I have heard some really good readers on these books. I read these books ( this one and the second one) when they first came out but listening to Ms Porter read them gives them a whole new life. I am now listening to the second one (Dragonfly in Amber) and enjoying it just as much.

People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

I liked this book. The story was a good one and Ms Coulter consistantly writes her stories well. This is one of them. The reader was very good. I would definately recomend this to my friends.
