Yea, I know, it's a zombie story. Nonetheless, I found the story line very weak. A bunch of shuffling thoughtless zombies that have to bite you to infect you and can be killed with a single shot to the head, and yet they manage to pretty much takeover the world in the space of a couple of weeks, overrunning military installations and entire cities with apparent ease...? A naval aviator protagonist that arbitrarily decides to not report for duty when ordered, yet manages to somehow survive while his entire well armed military base is overrun by the undead? Who scavenges for food at places like Walmart yet can't seem to scavenge for the billions of bullets that obviously weren't used on the billions of undead wandering the landscape. Come on...
Note to J. L. Bourne, if you are going to write this kind of story, at least make it credible. If you listen to the book, you'll hear many more examples of this kind of illogic. To me, these flaws seriously detract from the story. If the logical inconsistencies don't bother you, the story is ok and the performance is reasonably good. If you want an example of how it should be done though, listen to "The Passage" by Justin Cronin...outstanding!
I hope Dean Koontz had this ghost written because it was awful. Although the narrator read well enough, his characterization of some of characters made me ill. The written dialogue was so childish I had to struggle to finish. There was almost no plot. I've read a lot of Koontz and this is very uncharacteristic of him. Makes me suspect he had it ghost written in order to finish his contract and didn't have time to review what was being sent in his name. This is a real shame because I really liked the first book. Stay away from this one!
I loved this book. Kate Wilhelm writes a very readable book and Anna Fields (aka Kate Fleming, recently deceased and a great loss to audio) does a great job narrating. Considering the story won a Hugo back in the mid-70s, the theme (human caused environmental disaster and cloning) is current and relevant. If you're looking for a good story to get lost in for a few hours and you like sci fi, this book is worth your time.
