They called it Satan's Circus, a square mile of Midtown Manhattan where vice ruled, sin flourished, and depravity danced in every doorway. At the turn of the 20th century, murder was so common in the vice district that few people were surprised when the loudmouthed owner of a shabby casino was gunned down on the steps of its best hotel.

    "WELL DONE!"
    Overall

    A compelling story well read.

Satan's Circus tells the story of the only police officer ever executed in the USA.

The moralistic streak that hit this country didn't exist in Satan's Circus and it seems that everyone pretty much knew and let it slide.

As much political history as true crime story in this book we learn that the complaints of today are the same as it ever was.

Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing....

I bought this because it was my book club's selection. While I expected it to,be about sex in early man, I didn't expect all the other evolutionary science that went with it. Great book, and I expect a great discussion.

General Stonewall Jackson was like no one anyone had ever seen. In April of 1862 he was merely another Confederate general with only a single battle credential in an army fighting in what seemed to be a losing cause. By middle June he had engineered perhaps the greatest military campaign in American history and was one of the most famous men in the Western World. He had given the Confederate cause what it had recently lacked: hope.

As is often the case Jackson was much more complicated than "school book" history indicates. Great story here. I look forward to more from this author.

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

The real war on terror has happened largely behind closed doors, run by the White House, drawing on secret intelligence and operations around the world. There is no man who knows more about it than Richard Clarke, the former Counterterrorism Czar for both George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, the man who has led our efforts against al Qaeda and all other terrorist enemies for years.

I suspect that after hearing this you will decide, as I did, that Richard Clark is the ONLY government official involved in defending the homeland since the election of Ronald Reagan that does not owe Americans an apology over 9-11. He IS,however the only one that has apologized.

Lone Star Nation is the gripping story of Texas' precarious journey to statehood, from its early colonization in the 1820s to the shocking massacres of Texas loyalists at the Alamo and Goliad by the Mexican army, from its rough-and-tumble years as a land overrun by the Comanches to its day of liberation as an upstart republic.

H W Brands is fast becoming one of the best writers of history. He will not lose any fans with this book. Texas has always been a source of rich history and as usual Bill Brands tells the story with flair.

In 17 consecutive best selling novels, Jonathan Kellerman has proven himself the master of the psychological thriller. Now, in Kellerman's most compelling novel yet, L.A. psychologist-detective Alex Delaware confronts a long-unsolved murder of unspeakable brutality - an ice-cold case whose resolution threatens his survival and that of longtime friend, homicide detective Milo Sturgis.

    Lynn says: "I liked it"
    "Chilling"
    Overall

It helps to know something of his previous work to enjoy this. It also helps to know that he made Milo gay because the LA Police cheif announced one that that there were NO gay officers in LA. Milo's choice of gender in a partner plays a part here.

Parts of this are chilling and as always in Delaware stories the past comes back to haunt the present.

I have read all the Alex Delaware novels. While this is not the best is is still very good and some things in it will haunt you. Just as they haunted the cop that kept "The Murder Book"
