"Borderline erotica"
I bought this book based on reviews/ratings; I wanted something different to listen to during stressful wait times. This book is horrible. It reminds me of a porn flick - no plot, just gratuitous, poorly done sex. Don't get me wrong, I'm far from a prude, but this book is just crap. The story is gratuitous, the sexual encounters even more gratuitous. There are better writers and better books for romance style - Natural Born Charmer for one. This book drove me back to my serial killers and mysteries!
"Great Way to Put Yourself To Sleep at Night"
This was 10 hours of babbling and town gossip by an alcoholic, over-the-hill, has-been real estate agent. Nothing I can't get at family gatherings. The woman who narrated it was annoying at times—you could hear every cigarette she ever smoked.
"Great Story Poorly Written and Narrated"
This could have been such a good book because the story was so good. But there were just too many leaps of faith needed (similar to those one had to make in Room). The story was basically Little House on the Alaskan Tundra intertwined with the side story of a girl that raised her self alone in the woods despite the wild animals, lack of food and treacherous weather. But let's say she does... how does she learn all she knows? Where did she get her "homemaker" tools and skills used with the wedding dress?
The dialogue between characters is stiff and weak and isn't used to move the story along or explain things as it could have. The overall writing is so inconsistent. Some of the writing is very good and some of it is like a high school kid. The narrator didn't have much to work with but made it worse with her reading style (rather than acting) and flat tone.
But despite all of the problems the book had, the story was a very good one. Predictable in many parts but still very good and the reason I stuck it out to the end. Wish a the author and narrator had done a better job with so much potential.
"Depressing from the beginning."
Nothing.
No.
The performance was too bland and sounded too much like someone just reading out loud.
I would have left out sexual comments the main character made. They didn't add anything to the story, they seemed like they were stuck in the book, they really didn't fit in. Distracting actually.
This book is about the plague and is depressing from the beginning to the end. It would be worth a read if it were educational or historical, but it wasn't either. Would not recommend.
"Fabulous listen. Loved the Story and Characters"
My father recently passed away and Tom Harry (the bartender) reminded me so much of my dad with his sayings and philosophy — don't do anything stupid. The narrator is terrific. The writing style makes this a very easy listen. Highly recommend.
"Worst Narration I've Heard"
I've listened to hundreds of books and this is by far the worst narrated book yet. The story was good in a few parts; the parts that related to the mother and what happened to her. The rest is just garbage. Very disappointed in this one. Recommend you spend your money elsewhere.
"Like 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult"
Well written, but predictable. Very reminiscent of 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult. If you've read that one, no need to listen to this one.
"Should be Audio Winner-Best Performance I've Heard"
Loved this performance. Like listening to a two person play. The story was also excellent. Lots of suspense, lots of twists, and neatly tied up at the end. Highly recommend.
"Lord of the Flies Redux"
I loved how the book started. I couldn't put it down. But as it progressed it seemed too simple a story, more for teens than for grown ups. If it weren't for the fight to the death of the kids in the games, I would definitely say this was a kids book. The ending was weak, I doubt I'll read the sequels. It was like Lord of the Flies, with the gov. playing the part of man's natural instincts.
"Could have easily been a masterpiece!"
This book could have easily been a solid 5 in both narration and story. Had a different narrator been used for both Lisa and Mosey it would have been much better. I don't think the author/narrator captured Mosey at all. There wasn't much to capture with Lisa, but it still was lacking. The story had lots of problems. It starts out with Big (main character) about to enter a custody hearing for her granddaughter armed only with her determination and a cup. The rest of the story gets to the importance of the cup. But the ending of the story doesn't mention the hearing or the cup at all. The story just stops. A second HUGE issue is with Little (Lisa). The first half of the story has Lisa as victim of a stroke and the last half of the story a victim of poisoning. Today's medical technology would not have confused the two. This problem is exacerbated by the fact the author keeps mentioning how the characters know from watching CSI how to do certain things and how to be top notch snoops. A mother so determined to figure out her daughter would not have accepted a wrong diagnosis. I also had a problem with how much brain trauma the author gave Lisa. Sometimes Lisa couldn't understand anything, the next minute she is making complicated associations. Big leaps for the listener/reader. Having said all that, I couldn't put the book down. I loved it. But it could have been a real masterpiece! Highly recommend, just don't think as hard about it as I did. :)
"Narrator terrible; story old as time"
The narrator for this book is awful. He reads it way too fast and no "acting" of characters. He doesn't pause between story changes within a chapter so you have to guess where he's at between two "sets." I bought this because of the TV series Justified and reviews on audible. Big disappointment, glad it was on sale.
