I am doubly disappointed. I listen to a lot of mystery/ suspense novels and I bought this book on the recommendation of Audible. I don't see how anybody who actually read or listened to this book can recommend it. The subtitle on the cover of the book says "A Novel Of Suspense" and it's good they put that there because you would not know it was a suspense novel from listening to it. The entire first half is dedicated to setting up a tedious and ridiculous backdrop that I found myself saying "Come on, already!" several times in the car.
I am 3/4 of the way through and will not listen to it any more.
The narrator is the only good thing in this book. Even though his narrative style highlights the incredibly bad writing, his accents are prettty good.
This is my first book by this author and I bought it based on the stellar reviews it received. I enjoyed one of the narrators and disliked the other one enough that I would listen to several of her chapters on fast speed. It took me about half way to get into the book and I did finish it. However, I was glad when it was over so that I could move on to the next book. There are some unexpected twists and turns but in the end, the story seems just too improbable and I never really cared for the characters. One note: I am male and this book may speak more to female listeners.
This book is very disappointing. I have listened to all the other Mitch Rapp books and enjoyed most of them quite a bit. "American Assassin" feels like it was written in a week. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is that the reader does a great job again. There is a bit of the familiar action towards the end of the book but the first half is a complete waste of time. I am also getting a bit tired of Vince Flynn going on and on about how we need to get radically tougher with our enemies. I will not buy the next book in this series.
