This is the first book in a year of listening that I didn't finish. The narrator is droning & pedantic. I can't tell if it's the writing style or the narration that is really killing me but it's rather like being in you least favorite class at school. Goes to show that you can ruin even the most facinating topics with bad presentaion.
Maybe the best book of the year for me. The narration is somewhat addictive. A ton of twisty story in a small space! I promptly bought two older books from the author & while they did not quite match up none disappointed. More please!
I have loved the previous South Pacific books but just hated this. The whiney introspection did nothing for me. Please Mr Troost, entertain me. This is not the venue for your problems. I am glad that you have battled the demon drink (& your publishers) successfully, however I do not wish to read a book about it!! Mr Vance did a sterling job with a horrible book. No fault there.
It seems like other reviewers are not mentioning this enough. It is, indeed beautifully written with great characters but it is also laugh out loud funny. I approached this one expecting it to be lovely but meloncholic. Have not finished yet but VERY laugh out loud. Don't be scared. You will like it!
I had no problems with Mr. Roll's narration, unlike some listeners. He has an interesting life story, well told. His story was not easy for me to relate to & he certainly was pretty extreme. He was candid with his more unlike able characteristics but with, perhaps, a predictable effect that I found him, ultimately unlike able. I don't mean to slam this one. I listened to the whole story with enthusiasm. Hard to relate to is perhaps my best synopsis.
Like many other listeners I've sometimes struggled with Mr. Irving but when he's good he's soooo good! Not his absolute best for me but well worth spending my credit. I loved the dry humor from beginning to end & it's an unusual & interesting story line. I tried Son of the Circus & could not finish it so I'm a little gun shy but found this one rewarding.
The best of the year for me. Fantastic character writing. I was actually thinking that the end would not be much but it was the best part of the book. Amazing. Going to try another Irving next.
This was a little slow to start for me but once I got into Vida's story I just could not stop. It's an old fashioned type tale in a contemporary style. The protagonist is a little stand-offish to begin but I soon started to relate to her. I will listen to this one again.
The narration was at times somewhat melodramatic, but then so is the story. I'm a big fan of these two & enjoyed myself the whole way through although a little guiltily. Creepy bits & good characters as always.
For the rest of you literary losers out there: don't feel too bad! I thought that it would be easier to listen to Dickens than to read him & thus get some classics under my belt.
This wasn't really my sort of book but a friend suggested it & I felt pressured. It is like no other book. I hated the reviews who didn't think is was believeable. It's fiction people!! You have to roll with it a little! I loved it the whole way.
