Fans of the #1 bests eller Sh*t My Dad Says will recognize the always patient voice of Justin Halpern's dad as it crackles through this hysterical new audiobook. The story begins when Justin announces that he's decided to propose to his girlfriend. "You've been dating her for four years," his dad replies. "It ain't like you found a parallel fucking universe."

Some of this is very funny, but in the end, it just wasn't for me. I guess am too jaded to listen to stories about boys and young men's troubles with girls. I kept cringing like I do to some sitcoms. Somehow I thought it would be more metaphorical...

Lila, homeless and alone after years of roaming the countryside, steps inside a small-town Iowa church - the only available shelter from the rain - and ignites a romance and a debate that will reshape her life. She becomes the wife of a minister, John Ames, and begins a new existence while trying to make sense of the life that preceded her newfound security. Neglected as a toddler, Lila was rescued by Doll, a canny young drifter, and brought up by her in a hardscrabble childhood.

"Lila" works beautifully as an audio book. And Lila is such a beautifully written character. I am sure I enjoyed it more because I have already read Gilead. It's also a meditation on loneliness, universalism and the people we cannot do without. If you're in a reflective, elegiac mood, this is a great book.
