  • The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True

Richard Dawkins, the world’s most famous evolutionary biologist, presents a gorgeously lucid, science book examining some of the nature’s most fundamental questions both from a mythical and scientific perspective. Science is our most precise and powerful tool for making sense of the world. Before we developed the scientific method, we created rich mythologies to explain the unknown. The pressing questions that primitive men and women asked are the same ones we ask as children. Who was the first person? What is the sun? Why is there night and day?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The narration was fabulous and the content was worth a listen, but only barely. The arguments put forth were very detailed, but obvious. To some degree, I think that Dawkins was just preaching to the choir, because I don't think that the book would change anyone's attitudes.

What does Richard Dawkins and Lalla Ward bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Very enjoyable presences. Their sense of timing was excellent.

Was The Magic of Reality worth the listening time?

There weren't any shocking revelations or moments of sudden insight. What Dawkins does, though, is put together a very detailed argument and that's worth a listen.

Jeff Hawkins, the man who created the PalmPilot, Treo smart phone, and other handheld devices, has reshaped our relationship to computers. Now he stands ready to revolutionize both neuroscience and computing in one stroke, with a new understanding of intelligence itself.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A number of things would have to change. First, the author needs to explain how his expertise is more credible than others. Second, the reader, who really does have a wonderful, dramatic voice, needs to quicken his pace. With such a deep, dramatic voice, slowing down to the snails pace he kept made him sound drunk.

What do you think your next listen will be?

My next book was Nate Silver's "The Signal and the Noise."

Would you be willing to try another one of Jeff Hawkins and Stefan Rudnicki ’s performances?

    Maybe

What character would you cut from On Intelligence?

The author who is clearly present at all times in the most narcissistic way.
