Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

I loved this book in print, but could not abide the reader. I quit after about 90 minutes. A real disappointment.

One of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory, Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain is a masterpiece that is at once an enthralling adventure, a stirring love story, and a luminous evocation of a vanished America in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.

A masterfully-written story that transports you to a different time and place. The characters are compelling, as are the challenges they face. I loved reading it in print, and decided to return to it in this recording, read by the author. I was not disappointed--even better the second time through. One of my favorite books.
