  • The Duchess

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Amanda Foreman
    • Narrated By Wanda McCaddon
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

With penetrating insight, Amanda Foreman reveals a fascinating woman whose struggle against her own weaknesses, whose great beauty and flamboyance, and whose determination to play a part in the affairs of the world make her a vibrant, astonishingly contemporary figure.

connie says: "accessible, entertaining and good history"
"History comes to life in all it's glory"
What made the experience of listening to The Duchess the most enjoyable?

It felt like being taken back in time and into the world of the characters

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Author was my favorite as she put so much intensity into the book that her reflections were like an additional character.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I had no idea just how intellectual and avant guard Georgiana really was. I loved hearing how she impacted the world of politics and knowledge in her time.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The film was not nearly as informative as the book, in fact it sensationalized but at the same time glossed over the most sensational aspect which was that the duchess was a very modern woman living in a world where women could and did make a difference.

    Any additional comments?

Fantastic reader, her voice added to the ambiance of the story.

My husband listened with me on vacation and we both will miss the people of the story.

  • Greetings from Afghanistan, Send More Ammo: Dispatches from Taliban Country

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Benjamin Tupper
    • Narrated By Johnny Heller
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Captain Benjamin Tupper spent a year in Afghanistan in an Embedded Training Team, tasked with training, leading in combat, and mentoring the Afghan Army to victory against the brutal Taliban. Writing and recording from a remote outpost, Tupper's dispatches were posted on the blog The Sandbox and broadcast on NPR, bringing vivid snapshots of America's longest ongoing war to a wide audience back home.

A book that will open your eyes and allow you to understand the war in Afghanistan.
The book is an entry point into America's war in Afghanistan as well as into the afghani culture. I found myself not wanting it to end.

The last bit of the book when the author describes PTSD was just brilliant in its ability to explain a concept most people cannot grasp for lack of a personal experience. Having a clearer picture of what our vets are going thought when the come home from deployment has made me look at military personnel in a different light.

Overall the book is an easy and fun read it will show you the good and the bad of life in a war zone. The author has an incredible ability to draw you in!

    Get this book!!

  • Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Kolbert
    • Narrated By Hope Davis
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Taking listeners from the melting Alaskan permafrost to storm-torn New Orleans, acclaimed journalist Elizabeth Kolbert approaches this monumental problem from every angle. She interviews researchers and environmentalists, explains the science, draws frightening parallels to lost civilizations, and presents the moving tales of people who are watching their worlds disappear.

    Andy says: "just the facts"
    "A must read for everyone!"

The author knows how to write and to convey information without patronizing the audience - she is about information (draw your own conclusions). The book also does not fall into the statistics trap.

Without hesitation an excellent (albeit frightning) resource on climate change and it's consequences.

    Reader is also perfectly suited.

  • The Modern Scholar: God Wills It!: Understanding the Crusades

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Thomas F. Madden
    • Narrated By Thomas F. Madden

The story of the many crusades are filled with an unremitting passion to keep or return the home of Christianity to Christians. It is also filled with death, destruction, disorder, greed, avarice, and self-interest on all sides. Much of what occurred during the Crusades has come down to us today in the form of continued suspicion among religious ideologies - not only between Christians and Muslims, but also internally among Christian sects and, to some degree, among Muslim sects.

Wanda says: "Excellent set of lectures!"
    "Excellent set of lectures!"

I would recomand this to anyone who would like to understand the crusades.
They are well thought out and brilliantly delivered.
