I love Mitch Albom and the way he writes and the messages he has to share. This book does have a good message though I felt this one was not as effective as his others have been. The narrator was excellent and his voice for each character was perfect. It is a short book and certainly well worth the time.
This is a wonderful novel. The balance of story, fact, fiction, pace, and the intersection and coming together of story lines is pure brilliance. This book is an example of writing genius. The amount of knowledge alone on the subject of this war leaves me awestruck not to mention how he weaves the stories of two separate characters and how they finally connect. The writing style is often dreamy and poetic, so much better (for me) as a listen. WWII is not a pleasant subject and yet he brings humanity to each side.
This book really tried to make something interesting out of a historical figure who, all in all, really didn't have enough of a story to drive a fairly long novel. The fictional character of Handful gave us a bit more in terms of interest, but the entire novel seemed like a long plodding backstory waiting for something to finally happen. And I do know the subject matter is very important. What was of interest, surprisingly, was the lengthy after note narrated by the author in which she details all of her research, and what is fact and what is fiction. I loved this part.
This is the third book of Liane Moriarty that I have "read". She is great for a fun, suspenseful, story driven ride. After reading something serious or historical, her books are the perfect choice for a nice balance. Caroline Lee does great with numerous characters, maybe just slightly over the top with Madeline, but lovely narrator. Enjoy
Though the overall story of this book is interesting, it moves at such a slow pace that it gets frustrating. This is due to the use of backstory. Sometimes, this background has a point and is connected to the story, but often I was thinking why, let's please get on with it. From my perspective, the "condition" of the character Gwen was just a piece of the plot line, no more or less significant than the personality traits of the other family members. I am glad that the author did tie up the story lines which gives the reader closure. The narrator was good but I did often wonder whether I would have read the characters quite as "hard" as she did.
I got this book as it was suggested "If you liked Gone Girl..." I loved Gone Girl and I have to say, this was even better. I am a story driven reader and this was so well paced, with lots of twists and unexpected turns, so very entertaining. Also, the narrator, an Australian, was excellent, perfect for the book, which is set in Australia. Another one of those books which, when you listen when you drive, you don't want to get to your destination because you have to stop listening! A top 3 favourite for me for sure.
This book was a Facebook recommendation. I have to say, it was one of the most entertaining reads I've listened to in a long time! The story was very well paced with twists and turns and layers coming at you left and right. The narrators were just great, especially Julia, in the way she was able to create the different sides of her character. I listen to books while driving to work and I was sitting in my driveway all week because I couldn't stop listening. I have to say I would have written a different ending but that didn't take away from the overall thrill of this book.
I regularly listen to Jodi Picoult. Though her books have some similarities, they are extremely well researched and very informative on their subjects. This book I found to be one of the most enlightening and interesting ones to date. The story of the wolves is fascinating and the way she intertwines it with the delicate situation at hand is genius. I always like to hear what this author has to say and love the ways she tells her stories. This is one of her best.
This is a very entertaining book whose story covers many time periods and topics. This all fits together perfectly for the listener's pure enjoyment. I like to listen to a variety of types of books and this one is great for such a fun and inventive fictional journey. Have fun.
This book has a cast of very contrasting characters with opposite stories and lives that eventually interweave and come together for a very satisfying read. I had a very hard time getting used to the narrator as she made the lead female characters sound like they were whiney thirteen year olds. Enjoyable from start to finish.
