  • The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By David Hajdu
    • Narrated By Stefan Rudnicki
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In the years between World War II and the emergence of television as a mass medium, American popular culture as we know it was first created in the bold, pulpy pages of comic books. The Ten-Cent Plague explores this cultural emergence and its fierce backlash while challenging common notions of the divide between "high" and "low" art.

    Paul Krasner says: "Very frightening"
"Great for the true comic book fan"

I found this book enjoyable, but. . .

I think a comic book collector should and would cling to most of this book. It sort of got a little dry in the middle with historical information that I started to just want to work through.

Having said that, I really liked the book overall. I am a fan of Mad Magazine, and I particularly enjoyed reading about its history in this book. This book also does remind us that censorship has been around a long time--and will continue for a long time to come. I particularly love how we use blame and censorship to absolve us of blame for the behavior of our children. G(g)od forbid we should blame genes and poor parenting.

Enjoy this book and fast forward when it gets too dry. Many moments are quite entertaining.

  • Ugly Americans: The True Story of the Ivy League Cowboys Who Raided the Asian Markets for Millions

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Ben Mezrich
    • Narrated By Ben Mezrich

Ugly Americans is the true story of John Malcolm, a Princeton graduate who traveled halfway around the world in search of the American dream and pulled off a trade that could be described as the biggest deal in the history of the financial markets.

Marin says: "Great book with an entertaining reader!"
    "Entertaining Fictional / Nonfictional Amalgam"

This was quite enjoyable. As you listen to the book you get the distinct impression that most of the characters are actually fictionalized versions of real people.

But it is a great read about the wild world of gut check investing and alot more entertaining than some other similar books I have listened to.

  • Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed

    • ABRIDGED (9 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Jared Diamond
    • Narrated By Christopher Murney

In his million-copy best seller Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond examined how and why Western civilizations developed the technologies and immunities that allowed them to dominate much of the world. Now in this brilliant companion volume, Diamond probes the other side of the equation: what caused some of the great civilizations of the past to collapse into ruin, and what can we learn from their fates?

Rebecca says: "an fascinating book, but better on paper"
    "As Unbiased as it gets"

I found this book compelling, informative, and about as unbiased as you can get--given the subject matter. It is always easy to look back in history and point to errors made. It is more difficult to look at those errors and examine how they were made with or without the apparent knowledge of their consequences. He does a pretty good job of examining that and I enjoyed the ride.

  • Forbes' Greatest Investing Stories

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Richard Phalon
    • Narrated By David Hilder

Biotech, high tech, bubbles, and busts, no two stock markets are ever the same. Getting ahead of the game demands something hard to find on Wall Street these days, a flexible long-term strategy good for all seasons. Start your search with this book. Capitalizing on the techniques of the shrewd money spinners that it profiles will help you profit, no matter which way the wind blows.

Eric says: "Entertaining--but not life changing"
    "Entertaining--but not life changing"

This is an excellent book to just listen too. Even though it includes the story of Benjamin Graham--I don't believe this book carries the sorts of investment insights that might change the way you invest.

But there are some interesting stories, and it is fun to listen to.

  • Reagan in His Own Voice: Ronald Reagan's Radio Addresses

    • ORIGINAL (5 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Ronald Reagan
    • Narrated By Ronald Reagan

From 1975 to 1979 Ronald Reagan gave more than 1,000 daily radio broadcasts, the great majority of which he wrote himself. These addresses transform our image of Reagan, and enhance and revise our understanding of the late 1970s - a time when Reagan held no political office, but was nonetheless mapping out a strategy to transform the economy, end the Cold War, and create a vision of America that would propel him to the presidency.

Michael says: "I LOVED this -common sense in Reagan's own voice"
"Libertarian in the White House? Almost"

One thing emerges as quite fascinating when listening to this book. Reagan truly did have a philosophy that he questioned, reasoned, and honed during these radio years. By the time he got to the White House--he already knew what he believed.

I was more intrigued by the selections that featured his political and philosophical reasoning. There are an awful lot of touchy / feely segments included in this set. They are fine, but the political reasoning he has is more interesting and unusual.
