"Suite Francaise"
This book contains 2 stories that were planned as a 5 part novel. The author was murdered at Auschwitch in 1942. Unfortunatly this "unabridged" version does not include the important forward and appendices that outline the author's plans for the complete novel, nor does it tell about her life. I had to buy the book to get the extra 70 pages
"Were the political views pertinent to the story?"
I liked this story very much. It was well written, entertaining, and insightful in many ways. We have adopted children in our family and I can appreciate that they will want to know their heritage.
It was annoying that the author added a lot of her personal political views that were neither pertinent to the story nor necessary. I seriously doubt that the airheaded English girl she described would have been as well informed about American politics as this girl whose only obsession was to learn about her birth parents in America. As a conservative Republican I took exception to many of the Liberal ideas she espoused and found it disgusting that every character who had serious character flaws were Republican. It is too sad if she does not realize that there are many dumb, uninformed, and dishonest Democrats.
"Book for the very young"
This book would be great for a young girl or young adult woman who with a lot of unrealistic romantic ideas. They would love it and it has a lot of sex. It is not written for someone who likes a good, well-thought-out romantic novel. I skipped several chapters and finally just gave up . It was wasting my time.
"Pretty Juvenile"
The story was weak. Almost all dialogue. The reader did a good job but there was just not enough substance. Too much "we are in a desperate situation but all I can think about is jumping into bed with this person." Not enough background. Started off good when they explained the way the Chinese medicine man and Catherine met, but after that it was downhill all the way. Maybe a 15 year old would get turned on by all the sexual innuendo. An adult would see how trite it really is.
"the entire book was not read"
I chose this book by Jeffrey Archer because my husband read it (turned the pages) and enjoyed it so I also enjoyed it, but was disappointed when I discovered the entire book was NOT READ. There is a little over a chapter that is completely missing I assume it is because they interviewed the author and decided to just quit early When I read the REAL ending I was disappoointed They really got all but $1.24 NOT the $101.24 where the reader stos reading.
"Great book Good family book"
Am sending to my sister (who grew up during the depression) and and my daughter and granddaughter who will be the verbal historians. ONE SUGGESTION I grew up in the south with farm ancestors and in a farming community. .
When this very good reader says "brogans" it is like chalk on a board. The correct pronunciation is "bro(long "O") ANS (like the word and) emphasis on the ANS. My parents talked about them all the time.
An thinking when I go to visit my 9 year-old grand-twins for Thanksgiving, we will listen to this book together, They live in Virginia now.
"Seems pretty cynical to me"
I listened to every word of this book Found some of the historical information interesting, but frankly I didn't laugh at anything. Guess I grew up in a kinder/gentler world. I would hate to think all teenagers and all private school administrators and teachers are as bad as all these characters portray them. I must see the changes in readers voices made the listening bareable.
"Book of Love & Faith"
Compelling, inspiring. Loved that the characters did not have to swear every breath and while there was sex, it was not a "how to" book. The Faith in time of trials was inspiring.
"Angelology"
I struggled through all three parts of this book hoping it would get better, but in the end it was just not the kind of book I enjoy listening to. I thought it was boring and the fantasy of someone sprouting wings and flying was just too too much. I would never recommend it.
"The Race Comment"
If I want a political diatribe I will listen to Air America or IEB - but when I pick up fiction I do not want to be lambasted with Mr. Patterson's personal political views Maybe Mr. Patterson thinks his Alter Ego, Corey Grace shoul run for President. After all he is handsome (no woman can resist him) articulate, highly intelligent and can solve all the problems in the U.S. and the world. Since Mr. Patterson is SO SMART may be HE should run for office.
