I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of suspense films or novels. The author crafts a story that immerses the reader into a universe that is so vivid that you can literally see the entire story as it's being narrated.
Night Film is very original and you would be hard to find a similar story. While it falls into a modern noir category the writing and incorporation of the digital material makes it very unique.
While Weber comes off as monotonous initially you eventually accept it and even embrace it. His performance as the other characters is acceptable but not great. I would listen to another book narrated by Weber.
The entire story is gripping and you will find yourself scrutinizing the details.
Gone Girl is a great story that is excellently narrated by it's two narrators. Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne bring the characters to life in a way that is seldom heard in audibooks. The story for the first 2 of 3 acts is gripping and keeps the reader wanting to learn more.
My favorite character had to be Nick. When you are immediately placed in his shoes you feel for the character but at the same time you question the behavior and motives that he may have, and you get a feeling that he isn't quite telling the audience all the information he has. This makes the character straddle the line of being likeable and unlikeable at the same time which makes him all the more compelling.
These two narrators are able to tell the same story in two different view points in a way that makes the reader see into the world Flynn has created with a different perspective. Both narrators bring the characters to life in a way that is seldom heard in audiobooks. Their delivery honestly makes you feel like you're watching a movie.
Most definitely, as the story progresses you can't help but continue to listen.
The only real issue that I had was the ending of the book is completely unsatisfying. You invest 18 hours into listening to only end up feeling let down by the end, while you get a resolution it's not what the audience hopes for, which is a shame because the rest of the book is incredibly well written. It feels that when you reach the last act Flynn has just tired of her own characters and ran out of steam. It was the equivalent of watching an Olympic 100 yard dash where the runners are going full steam for 90 yards and then all of a sudden at yard 91 they decide to stop and walk off the track. And the worst part is that the reader can see what is most likely going to happen when they reach 91st yard marker. Overall I enjoyed the book, I just wished for a stronger ending.
Under the Dome is my first audiobook with Audible. After listening to the free preview I was hooked. After finishing I can honestly say this is my favorite audiobook.
To listen to this story with such an expansive cast of characters and pick a favorite is nearly an impossible task. I find myself going with the obvious choice and picking Barbie as my favorite but then I think of Joe and Rusty and even Big Jim and I find myself enraptured with these characters.
Esparza plays every character so incredibly well that you often forget it's only one person narrating. Every single member of the large cast has their own voice and Esparza does an amazing job of remaining consistent with all the characters. I would listen to any book narrated by Esparza, and found myself searching for other books he may have narrated.
I think the moment I was most moved was when one of the characters suddenly turns up dead. It wasn't a main character but when they die it happens so suddenly and matter-of-factly that you can't believe that King would go there. To have this character make it so far and then ultimately meet their demise with two simple sentences, in a way that is so cold you can't help but be saddened.
This book differs from the television series completely with only the dome and a few characters being the same. The book is an incredible look at this large cast of townspeople, whom all inspire you to be interested in what happens to them. I can say that this is my favorite book from Audible so far.
