"More for History, Less for facts"
I have been a Baigent fan since Holy Blood, Holy Grail. However this book has little to offer in new revelations. It does a great job of researching the history of Christianity but as usual he makes a pretty wild claim. Baigent says that he has seen a document, written by Jesus to the the Sanhedrin, that says he is not divine. The only problem is that Baigent couldn't read the document he was holding. Can anyone say Mormons? Once again, tantalizing but improbable. Still a great read for more history on Christianity.
"Average"
You can tell this guy is a big environmental apocalyptic. His points no doubt are interesting and well researched but he always comes to the conclusion that it is environmental damage that leads to collapse. Maybe early civilizations didn't have the technology or education to overcome these problems? Although he disputes that as well saying we should never think technology will solve our worries because it only creates more unforseen problems.
He doesn't mention much about the effects of intellectuals and leaders in early civilizations either. You can't expect any population to survive with a uneducated mass that depends on the gods or mystical leaders for crops and rain.
I also think he completely ignores modern civilizations problems. In the Middle East and Africa, the majority of people are uneducated and poor. These people could care less about their environment so of course they are going to wreck them. What keeps them in this state? It is there leaders, government or dictators. Their decisions, corruption and inaction wreak havoc on societies. How can you expect any socialist, communist or theocratic philosophy to sustain a population? Those people are completely dependent on their leaders and if the leaders are inept, they are doomed to fail.
Interesting book but had to keep the caffiene pumping to get through it.
"A guidebook to the future of commerce"
If you want to hear how India, China and Russia are going to be major players in the coming decades, get this book. Friedman makes an excellent case FOR globilization and how it is essential for our survival. I thought I could get through without him lambasting Bush but alas I was wrong. He says Bush hijacked the feelings of 9/11 to push his agenda for more security, higher walls, and fear. If my memory serves me correctly, everyone was screaming for more protection after 9/11. He was responding to both sides of the aisle.
Nonetheless still a great book.
"Fun read"
This is great book that takes a totally different look at things we take for granted. It is short and interesting. A fun read indeed.
"A good starting point"
The learning method here is second to none. I have tried Spanish tapes before they were words and phrases over and over again. I just wish they had level 2 on here.
"EXCELLENT!!!!!!"
Not only is this book a great read but it is incredibly informative. The parrallel story flows like water. I have recommeded it to several of my friends and they loved it.
"Good not Great"
I loved the narrator's Russian accent. The book was engrossing until the end and then it started to get a little over the top. A good listen though.
"Visionary, Astounding, Life Changing....."
IGNORE ALL THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS OF THIS BOOK! If you want to know why our country is in the state it is and where it is headed, read this book. Rand brilliantly explains the perils of a society that takes from people who produce and give to people who have no ability or desire to produce. Atlas Shrugged will change your views on government, politicians, professors, colleges, corporate america and organized religion. It touches virtually every aspect of your life.
I found this book to be more motivating than anything I've ever read. I actually found myself taking notes. I couldn't wait to get in my car to listen to more. Some of Rand's statements are so profound that they were epiphanys. Here are a couple of examples:
"If you motivate them through fear, hold their job over their head and treat them as a captive, they will act like one. They will do as they are told but no more. They will produce to the lowest level because they refuse to see you succeed by means of their production."
"It is a shame when today, rights are based on need, wishes, wants not production, talent and excellence. Your need for a house did not create the house, your mind, money and ability did."
People who scoff at this book are the ones Rand is denouncing. Read this book and you will understand.
