January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as an specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.

    Madeleine says: "Incredible!"
    "Excellent and haunting."

I have never read anything by Michelle Paver before so this was a pleasent surprise. A chillng ghost-story set in the most desolate and isolated enviroment imaginable and with characters that really feels alive. I'm usually not very fond of novels written in diary-form but Michelle Paver's prose pulls it through all the way to the ghastly ending.

I recommend the book to anyone interested in good ghost-stories and will certainly look up her other works as well.

Imogene is young, beautiful, kisses like a movie star, and knows everything about every film ever made. She's also dead, the legendary ghost of the Rosebud Theater. Arthur Roth is a lonely kid with a head full of big ideas and a gift for getting his ass kicked. It's hard to make friends when you're the only inflatable boy in town. Francis is unhappy, picked on; he doesn't have a life, a hope, a chance. Francis was human once, but that's behind him now.

Would you listen to 20th Century Ghosts, Volume 1 again? Why?

    No.

What didn’t you like about David Ledoux’s performance?

The reader is not reading a book. He is trying to dramatize it and doing a bad job at it. Overacting and badly delivered voices destroyed the book for me. That is a shame since I really liked the stories.

Both a dystopian masterpiece and a timely cautionary tale of what could happen if the powers that be monkey around with the food chain for their own ends, "Meat" breaks new ground in horror fiction.

Parusski says: "What's wrong with eating meat????"
"Good idea, not a very good book."
    Overall

The basic idea for Meat is thought-provoking and sickening. However its quite clear right from the beginning that this should had been a short-story, not a novel - The author fails to deliver a story an boggles down into preaching and occasional rape-fests.

The narrater does a good job but the music between each chapter is disruptive.
