"Storm Front" by Jim Butcher is the first book in the Dresden Files series. I have now listened to all 13 books in the series, plus Side Jobs: Stories from the Dresden Files. I just can't get enough!
Of all the books in the series, "Storm Front" was the weakest. After finishing it, I wasn't sure I wanted to use another credit to listen to the next book. Am I glad that I decided there wasn't anything else compelling! The books build upon themselves and get better and better as they go. Butcher has come up with a fun and entertaining idea of a wizard, and has crafted likable characters that readers can root for. Harry Dresden is a wonderful hero and I look forward to many more adventures with him.
"Storm Front" introduces us to Harry Dresden, the only wizard who advertises in the Chicago yellow pages. He is a wizard who is having trouble making ends meet. You'd think that being a wizard would keep Harry in high demand, but unfortunately people in the 21st century don't believe things like magic exist.
Butcher crafts an original and compelling mystery, and readers will become utterly wrapped up in Harry's dilemma. In the course of his investigation, Harry runs into all kinds of supernatural beasties, including fairies, demons, vampires, and giant scorpions! Add to it Harry's hilarious assistant, Bob an air spirit with an overactive libido who lives in a human skull, and you have the recipe for a wonderful and exciting read.
"Storm Front" is a suspenseful and well-written mystery, and Harry Dresden has a wonderful self-depreciating sense of humor that really endears him.
If you enjoy mysteries or fantasy writing of any kind, give "The Dresden Files" a try, you'll like it a lot!
Ok -I'm gonna go out on a limb here. All of the other reviews have said that the story was great -which it was. However, this story could have been told in less than the 23 hours it took to tell it without losing anything. Stephenie Meyer is a fabulous writer and Kate Reading once again does a great job narrating. My only critique is that it's too long.
