"If you're looking for Tolkein...."
This is not it! This is light hearted, easy to follow, and will still suck you in.... if you let it. I wanted something that wasn't mired in so much detail it would put me to sleep (Tolkein) while I drove! I got exactly what I wanted with this book.
I listen in a car and occasionally get distracted, this did not impact the enjoyment I had listening to this book. I will continue to listen to the rest of the series.
At first listen, I wasn't sure I was going to like the narrator, but now... surprisingly, I am a fan as others have also written.
"Be warned..."
Read the book description carefully! This is short!!!!! I made the mistake of thinking it was another in the Bosch series. Granted I was trying to get something quickly to listen to on a long ride... but still it was amazingly disappointing to hit the end so quickly.
"One word... epic"
This book, as a few have stated, does start out a bit slow. If you hang in there you will be rewarded with an epic story. Enjoyment factor is double if you have 2-3 siblings. You have to like detail and long descriptions. I generally don't like too much detail, yet this book kept my interest and I look forward to listening to the next. I will probably space the books out with something lighter in between. I think the fans of "Game of Thrones" will enjoy this book. It's certainly going to keep you going while you wait for the next season on cable!
As for Dick Hill... amazing. Just when you think you've heard every voice he will ever do, he introduces more! I'm a huge fan and have listened to many books simply because he's the narrator.
"Suspend all logic and reason... then enjoy."
Follow the advice in the title of this review and you can enjoy this book. With the Bosch series, you're kept in your seat by the long history you may already have with the main character, no matter how bad the book. That does not apply to this book. I can absolutely see everyone's frustration with this book. The only saving grace for me is that I have known some AMAZINGLY "book smart" people that lack "street savvy." They make all kinds of naive mistakes on a daily basis as does our hero in this book. So I was able to give the book the latitude it needed to be enjoyable.
