  • Revolutionary Characters: What Made the Founders Different

Gordon Wood's wondrous accomplishment here is to bring these men and their times down to earth and within our reach, showing us just who they were and what drove them. In so doing, he shows us that although a lot has changed in two hundred years, to an amazing degree the virtues these founders defined for themselves are the virtues we aspire to still.

I'm sure it had good content and was very interesting, but I couldn't finish the book. It was kind of boring and the reader added an odd inflection to the ends of random sentences that I found quite unnerving.

If this topic is very interesting to you, I'm sure you'd probably like the book. If not, save your time.

  • The Adventure of English: The Biography of a Language

This is the remarkable story of the English language; from its beginnings as a minor guttural Germanic dialect to its position today as a truly established global language. The Adventure of English is not only an enthralling story of power, religion, and trade, but also the story of people, and how their lives continue to change the extraordinary language that is English.

I thought this book was amazing. I loved the content, thought it was very informative, and enjoyed listening to the reader.

Whoever told him he should read aloud several lists of 100 English words might deserve a punch in the face. Though the book was so good, after surviving the lists (which are undoubtedly more interesting when one can skim them in print), the book doesn't suffer any ill effect from them, and is as enticing as it is informative and interesting.

    Extraordinary.
