I kept hoping this story would turn around and make all my time invested worth something but it just kept getting worse and worse and worse. Just leave it where it lies if you read book one and don't waste your time with the rest of the series.
Don't let the first few chapters fool you. This book is a fun read. Its not going to change your life but it sure will make it more fun while you are reading it.
This book is extremely well thought out and written. I kept finding myself surprised at the amount of detail and depth JK Rowling put into this novel. I knew she could write, but this book is so different from "the series" she is so famous for and yet just as well thought out and detailed. I grew to love the main Character, Strike, and his assistant Robin. I thought I would hate the Hollywood Glam aspect but JK tells the tale from a very rational "this is what this sh%t can do to you" stand point. Its an incredible tale woven with the utmost care. I wasn't sure how I would like the narrator but he did an amazing job! I'm recommending it to all my friends.
At 28 I can throw down teen novels like the best of em and not flinch. I can enjoy the creativity and escape of just a fun YA book. This book has strong characters, strong morals and I don't even mind the plot. However I found it much harder to get sucked in by than most Ya books. This is a perfect book if you are 14, 15 or maybe 16 but older than that and don't think it has enough to offer the reader. Its too shallow and lacks depth and creativity albeit pleasantly done.
I read the reviews about this book being violent and I wasn't worried. Turns out the violence is tolerable if you are over 14 but its just down right depressing and not uplifting in the least. I kept hoping there would be some sense of positivity somewhere but honestly its just one negative bleak brutal event after the next. I gave it three stars for being creative and different although the plot doesn't quite hold together.
I was very skeptical about this book but I actually LOVED this. The references to the real world are obvious but that doesn't make them any less powerful or insightful.
I liked this book. Its hard to compete with how amazing the first book was, but it was still a great read. I recommend it to anyone who liked the rest of the series.
If you loved the first book you should read this one. Its not as good as the first, but almost. There is a lot more magic in this book but the main themes of self reliance, self mastery and self exploration still abound and are fascinating.
I can't believe I hadn't heard more hype about this book before reading it. The main character is strong and makes no excuses for her actions or situations. The accountability and self reliance is so refreshing from a young female character. I wish more YA books had such admirable characters. The plot has depth with twists and turns. All the characters in the book are flawed and it makes the story that much more real.
There are some graphic sexual violence scenes but in my opinion they are done in a very raw real but tactful way. I am generally very sensitive to those but while this is graphic, it is true to life and the story warrants their use. Her perspective on the violence is that of a survivor and not a victim and shows how one can experience trauma and come out better for it, no matter how gnarly it was. Its not a huge part of the story but readers should be aware.
Over all I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone. I found the glimpse into the girls heart and mind inspirational and the story enthralling.
It was a good book but I desired something stronger for the ending to the series. It ties in the Chloe factor from the other Darkness Rising series, but I just expected it to be . . .more. I gave it a good rating because the book is still entertaining and well done. Its a fun read.
