In February 1966, U.S. Navy pilot Dieter Dengler was shot down over "neutral Laos". He crashed deep in territory controlled by North Vietnamese army regulars and the communist Pathet Lao, who would eventually capture him and hold him prisoner in a fortified jungle prisoner-of-war camp.

I thank Bruce Henderson and Dieter Dengler for their service to our country. I admire Dieter's heroism. But I really didn't enjoy this book, sorry to say. A listener with a military background may enjoy it more than I did, since it is THICK with military detail. I found my attention wandering when listening to the book. The last couple of hours were pretty engaging - but it took a lot of listening to get to that point.
Possibly, I was a little more critical because I had just finished Unbroken by Lauren Hillenbrand - which was the perfect combination of story, hero, writer, narrator.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

Silly me - I didn't realize THIS is the book by JK Rowling under a pen name until I was finished with it and reading other reviews. It doesn't matter. My review is the same -- EVERYTHING about this audiobook is perfect. The engaging story, memorable full characters, pace, and outstanding narration. I truly hope it is the first of a series, as the future for these characters is ripe with possibilities.

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. Joyland is a brand-new novel and has never previously been published.

I'm surprised to find 444 books in my Audible library - but I guess that makes me an experienced listener! Of course this book is great, it's a Stephen King book, but my goodness what excellent narration! Just like Will Patton reading James Lee Burke's Robichaux novels, I can't imagine any other voice telling this story. I was so surprised to find that Michael Kelly hasn't narrated another book on Audible. If he had that would have been my next purchase.

I look forward to more narration by MIchael Kelly.

Joyland was a sweet, wonderful, moving, terrifying story. I recommend it.

Summer is the season for sin. When Ted Clinton arrived at the vacation inn, he found that it featured some unexpected diversions. Like sleek Ruth Henderson and her bevy of hostesses whose job it was to please male guests. Lady vacationers, too, starving for love and excitement, did their share to turn summertime into playtime.

I understand Orrie Hitt has somewhat of a cult following, and I understand why. The language in this book took me back to the sixties -- language which would enflame many in our current "land of the offended." It was such a fun listen! A not-too-complicated plot, populated by memorable and already-familiar characters. This is my first time listening to Alan Taylor read, and I really enjoyed it. His voice is smooth, has a good cadence, and does not distract from the story. I'll add him to my list of favorite readers.

Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

What did you love best about A Higher Call?

The meeting of Franz and Charlie, when they were finally able to express their feelings in person.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Higher Call?

When Franz pulled alongside Charlie's side of the bomber, and attempted communicating...ending with the salute.

Have you listened to any of Robertson Dean’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Charlie called Franz on the phone.

    Any additional comments?

This is not my usual genre of reading. I'm so glad I followed recommendations on Audible and listened to this. What a touching, human story!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Anastasia Burke says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
"with gratitude - to Louie and to the author"
    Overall

I know (knew) men of my father's generation who were POWs in World War II. Our family was so fortunate that he served in that war without experiencing capture/imprisonment. This book has given me such a deeper understanding of what those brave men endured. Our country is forever indebted to them and their families for their sacrifices.

This is one of the best books I've ever listened to. Lauren Hillenbrand is a master. Edward Herrmann is a wonderful narrator. Louie Zamperini is such an incredible character and a hero for the ages. I feel so much richer for having listened to this book. Thank you to everyone involved - and long live Louie!

I tried, really I did. I kept hoping SOMETHING would happen in this book that would be worth listening to. I really hate to admit that I wasted a credit. But after two hours of listening, I realized I was wasting my time. I found the characters one-dimensional. Maybe if I had cared more about any of them I would have listened a little longer.

his most powerful and intricately-plotted novel yet. Thirteen year-old Johnny Merrimon had the perfect life: happy parents and a twin sister that meant the world to him. But Alyssa went missing a year ago, stolen off the side of a lonely street with only one witness to the crime. His family shattered, his sister presumed dead, Johnny risks everything to explore the dark side of his hometown in a last, desperate search.

    "A good story"
    Overall

This is a good story. Well told, and well-read. I agree that at times the pace of the reading was a bit slow, but being a Southerner myself maybe I've developed a tolerance for that. I appreciate the development of the characters and the twists of the plot. Not all books cause me to sit a little longer in the parking lot to listen - but this one did many times.

New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels began with this first hard-hitting entry in the series. In The Neon Rain, Detective Robicheaux fishes a prostitute's corpse from a New Orleans bayou and finds that no one, not even the law, cares about a dead hooker.

I've listened to all the other Dave Robichaux novels on Audible, and was SO glad to see this early one released. Of COURSE the plot, the characters, the writing - is masterful. I agree with the other reviewers here - Will Patton is the perfect narrator. Listening to this book, I truly forgot that I was listening to only one man's voice. The combination of Dave R/James Lee Burke/Will Patton remains my FAVORITE listen from Audible.
