Now, in this collection of provocative and illuminating essays, McPherson offers fresh insight into many of the most enduring questions about one of the defining moments in our nation's history.

    "great condensed history-superior narrator!"

For a concise review of the Civil War, and several intriguing points of the war I had not considered, this book was great. I felt the narrator was superb!

The Sheltering Sky is a landmark of 20th-century literature, a novel of existential despair that examines the limits of humanity when it touches the unfathomable emptiness of the desert. Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream) gives masterful voice to this American classic.

What would have made The Sheltering Sky better?

    Not ever being published

What was most disappointing about Paul Bowles’s story?

If I want to be this depressed in the future, I'll gamble away my savings.

Which character – as performed by Jennifer Connelly – was your favorite?

All three self-centered characters muddle about endlessly; so boring I almost dropped off to sleep while on my daily walk.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Not that I could see.

  • In Defense of Food

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." These simple words go to the heart of Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food. Humans used to know how to eat well, Pollan argues. But the balanced dietary lessons that were once passed down through generations have been confused, complicated, and distorted by food industry marketers, nutritional scientists, and journalists-all of whom have much to gain from our dietary confusion.

What made the experience of listening to In Defense of Food the most enjoyable?

After reading countless diet books, this was a refreshing review of what food really is, and what it is not. I have cancer, and Scott's reminder that overeating not only increases division of normal cells, but also of cancer cells, really stopped me. I have lost 12 pounds already following the simple rules of this book.

What other book might you compare In Defense of Food to and why?

None that I can think of

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

When avian flu began spreading across Asia in the early 2000s, it reawakened fears that had lain dormant for nearly a century. During the outbreak's deadliest years, Alan Sipress chased the virus as it infiltrated remote jungle villages and teeming cities and saw its mysteries elude the world's top scientists. In The Fatal Strain, Sipress details how socioeconomic and political realities in Asia make it the perfect petri dish in which the fast-mutating strain can become easily communicable among humans.

One of the attributes of a good narrator is the ability to make believable different characters in a book by using different, unique voices. Mr. Wilson falls short on this ability. His voicing makes all individuals sound alike.
