This story has an interesting mix of magic and fantasy, but is really about friendship. The author narrates and does a superb job. It gets off to a slightly slow start, but within the first hour I was entranced and listened to it all the way through in about 2 days. If you are mildly intrigued by the publishers description and not quite sure .... go for it. This book is a real pleasure and ends in a very satisfying way
Each of the books in this series captured my attention with complex story lines and characters, great narration and unexpected twists. This book never brought it together.
The quality of the narration is still there but the story never makes sense and leaves the reader up in the air. If there is to be another book in the series to wrap this all up, I can honestly say I've lost interest and won't bother with any more
This book continues the story started in Old Man's War focusing on the Special Forces in general and Jane Sagan in particular. Just as I thought I'd had enough of the tale, it kept evolving to develop the universe and personalities in much greater depth. While so many science fiction stories about humanity's expansion into the universe revolve around the same basic themes, this series is wholly different. There is limitless variety of species / races. Humans come in all the real varieties, not just good guys. I haven't enjoyed a story in this arena so much since the Ender's Game series. I will most certainly finish the entire series and probably look for more from John Scalzi.
This story is less about one husband's secret than all the secrets and misunderstandings that push our lives along. Cleverly crafted and beautifully narrated! I've recommended to all my friends who are books listeners and book readers. Enjoy!
As the story began, I was captured by curiosity. As the story developed, it looked briefly like a series of battle descriptions. Just as I thought I'd put it away, a whole new twist in the tale recaptured my full attention. The narration is great and the story builds to a thoroughly human and plausible conclusion.
I selected this based on the publisher's review and downloaded it before a long run. Gave it a whole 2 hours and couldn't listen any more. The story might be very interesting, but the narration sounded like a news report.
The world has been altered by the arrival of a celestial light called calamity creating EPIC human alteration. The EPICs have varied mystical powers and are cruel beings who change society into a world of fear, servitude and deprivation. Chicago is changed into a dark city with much of the city's structure turned to steel. A small group resists the EPIC rule with with technology that almost counters the EPIC powers. The story builds fascinating characters and grows to a SURPRISING climax. I almost always expect these surprises, but I did not see this one coming. Macleod Andrews does a great job!
This was my first encounter with Daniel Silva.... and his most recent book in the series. The story takes many unpredictable turns and is a classic of the cold war era spy novel set in the 21st century. Even though there were 12 books to precede this one, the story moves quickly along without need of knowledge of the previous books. Thoroughly enjoyable entertainment, and I will certainly listen to more in this series
As a child of the 60's who entered the working world in the 70's I was fascinated to read this. I confess that the facts as presented gave me much insight into an evolution through which I lived and benefited, and I am glad that I made it through the whole book. BUT it was not well organized, seemed to jump around with non-sequitur which only later coma together. It was a bit of challenge to keep interest
