The building of the Panama Canal was one of the greatest engineering feats in human history. A tale of exploration, conquest, money, politics, and medicine, Panama Fever charts the challenges that marked the long, labyrinthine road to the building of the canal. Drawing on a wealth of new materials and sources, Matthew Parker brings to life the men who recognized the impact a canal would have on global politics and economics.

Charles M. Hughes says: "Good book, marginal narrator"
    "Nice Surprise"

After I had bought this I wondered if I really wanted to hear about them building a cannal but when I listened to it I found it very intresting. Both author and narrator did a great job of making the story both intresting and informative.

Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, Welsh - enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion.

What made the experience of listening to Winter of the World the most enjoyable?

I was so sad!! I have been waiting for this book to be released for over a year because I just loved the first one! Sadly it is just not as good of a story line and the characters are not as interesting as they were in the first book. But I listened to every minute of it because I feel Ken Follett will come back and wow us with the third in the series! Don't worry Jonh Lee...still love ya!!

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, but what she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

Where does Room rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have listened to over 300 audio books and this still ranks highest for narration in my opinion! Story is great also! One of the best in my library!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

I don't know who deserves the two thumbs up more, the author or the narrator. When I bought this I thought this would not be the kind of book I would usually listen to and 40hrs and 54min seemed kinda long but I LOVED IT! The story and the narrator just draw you in and you just can't stop listening.I went on to buy World Without End(45hrs and 38min.) and loved it also. Great writing and narration, best best buy for your money.

A young woman sits in jail, accused of the mercy killing of her dying mother. She didn't do it, but she thinks she knows who did. In the last months of her life, Ellen Gulden's mother revealed startling secrets that challenged everything Ellen believed about her family. Now, in jail, Ellen believes those secrets will tell her who had the courage to end her mother's suffering.

Very sad and too realistic.Good twist at the end. If you are trying to decide between this book and Every Last One (also by Anna Quindlen) I would go with Every Last One. In this book I feel like the narrator is a little tedious but very clear and understandable.

I thought the book and the narrator started off a little slow at the beginning but it was sure worth hanging in there to listen further. I hate it when people tell what happens in the story but I will say that I couldn't stop listening until the story was over and the narrator is now one I would like to listen to again.

No One Would Listen is the exclusive story of the Harry Markopolos-lead investigation into Bernie Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. While a lot has been written about Madoff's scam, few actually know how Markopolos and his team - affectionately called "the Fox Hounds" by Markopolos himself - uncovered what Madoff was doing years before this financial disaster reached its pinnacle. Unfortunately, no one listened, until the damage of the world's largest financial fraud ever was irreversible.

I really didn't think this would be the kind of book I would like but I got the first chapter free through Audible and listening to it really spiked my interest. I bought the audio book and found it to be as fascinating as it was heartbreaking. It sure shows how our government continues to let us down and I think the SEC should have been completly been dismantled, it apparently is of no help to us anyway, who knows how many more Madoffs there are still out there. Two thumbs up to the author! One for trying to bring attention to the matter and one for writting such a interesting book about it. Hope to hear more from you!

  • Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey through His Son's Meth Addiction

David Sheff's story is a first: a teenager's addiction from the parent's point of view, a real-time chronicle of the shocking descent into substance abuse and the gradual emergence into hope.

Before meth, Sheff's son, Nic, was a varsity athlete, honor student, and award-winning journalist. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who stole money from his eight-year-old brother and lived on the streets. With haunting candor, Sheff traces the first warning signs, the attempts at rehabilitation, and, at last, the way past addiction. He shows us that, whatever an addict's fate, the rest of the family must care for one another, too, lest they become addicted to addiction.

Book and Movie Lover says: "Painful and honest account"

    Overall

I think this should be required reading for every middle school and high school student. I also think it should be part of every young drug offender program. I have heard so many parents that say they just don't know what they would be able to do if their kids got involved in drugs.Maybe if the kids could see it from the parents point of view they would understand that the parents care alot more than they think. Unfortunately there are very hard questions with very few answers.Good luck to all parents in this situation.

Jodi, What happened! Did you run out of printing ink? What happened to the end of the story? The rest of the story was great. I'm guessing there will be a part two to give it a ending. We don't listen for 20 hours not to have a ending!
