In Rip-Off!, 13 of today’s best and most honored writers of speculative fiction face a challenge even they would be hard-pressed to conceive: Pick your favorite opening line from a classic piece of fiction (or even non-fiction) - then use it as the first sentence of an entirely original short story.

Would you consider the audio edition of Rip-Off! to be better than the print version?

    N/A

What other book might you compare Rip-Off! to and why?

None come to mind, other than compilations of short stories variously over time, but none with this particular take on the themes.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The takeoff on the bewitched TV show was first rate and very humorous- as well as poignant, oddly enough...

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several- but I wont spoil it for you! ;)

    Any additional comments?

I highly recommend SCIFI fans to this book- but a warning: There is some fantasy here as well. For some that's a good thing, if you don't like fantasy then there are a few stories that will grate on you.

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, The Company can also be listened to as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says (Publishers Weekly).

If you could sum up The Company in three words, what would they be?

    Cloak And Dagger

What other book might you compare The Company to and why?

Inside Delta Force is similar in that it involves real working knowledge and case history fro actual agencies involved, told in an entertaining manner.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The final confrontation with the mole- but it was close with all the others along the way! MANY points to consider a highlight!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was moved several times by the characters and the portrayls.

    Any additional comments?

Just a first rate listen with many memorable moments- as well as an educational look into the worlds of the families and agencies involved.

What made the experience of listening to FREE The Human Division, Episode 1: The B-Team the most enjoyable?

Excellent voice work and a good, solid storytelling with believable conversation.

What was one of the most memorable moments of FREE The Human Division, Episode 1: The B-Team?

The discovery of the... well, it's a spoiler, so... let's just say some of the extra-vehicular activity and discoveries related to that portion were particularly interesting.

What about William Dufris’s performance did you like?

He is a smooth and skilled narrator with a facility for believable voices both male and female- and he does a great alien as well! DuFris is always good however.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, while portions were amusing, it was a thriller, so I didn't find anything that was in an extreme in that way- although it was highly enjoyable.

    Worth Your Time

Would you recommend The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated) to your friends? Why or why not?

Absolutely! It has instructions on uncluttering your life, simplifying the use and access to technology, and actual instructions in a step by step format that are easy to follow.

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

His believeable and solid voice inspires trust and is easy to follow, understand and immerse oneself into the lessons being laid out.

While I likely wont start an online business as he shows how to do, the structuring of ones life, the methods for stripping the essentials out for analyses are important and enjoyable. A fun listen that also is very educational.

In a pulls-no-punches essay intended to provoke rational discussion, Stephen King sets down his thoughts about gun violence in America. Anger and grief in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School are palpable in this urgent piece of writing, but no less remarkable are King's keen thoughtfulness and composure as he explores the contours of the gun-control issue and constructs his argument for what can and should be done.

    Story
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

While he started with some wonderfully logical points, the writer broke down and relied only upon some misinformation, miscategorizations, and inaccuracies at the end. Had he stayed the course he could have made a compelling argument for his viewpoints.

What was most disappointing about Stephen King’s story?

The descent into typical talking points and arguments against the 2nd amendment instead of the same analysis he brought to the first few paragraphs.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

In the beginning there was a coherent and emotionless argument analysed. In the end, an emotional rant without any supporting facts, all opinion.

What character would you cut from Guns?

    Not applicable.

    Any additional comments?

The Author should differentiate between facts and fictions and opinions. "Assault Rifle" is a term coined by the media, not an actual description of the weapons used in recent shootings. Also, no "Automatic" weapons were used, nor are any weapons used in these actually military weapons- rather they are simply hunting caliber semi automatic weapons that are modified to LOOK like a military weapon.

If proponents of gun control would simply admit this portion of the debate ahead of time and stop using inflammatory and pejorative sentences and words designed to frighten readers/listeners genuinely honest debate can ensue about reasonable measures being taken to better equip society in limiting access by the mentally ill to weapons that can be used to harm multiple people in short time frames- which would include chemicals, explosives, and arson tools as well I would imagine, if the debate is to be genuine.

Dr. Philip C. Plait sets the record straight on many modern hoaxes and myths. Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Without reservation. If you've always wanted to counter those Pseudo-scientific followers or espouse-rs, this is the ammo box of clear thinking and rational examples of why most of what "everybody knows" is wrong.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bad Astronomy?

The articles on the Moon and common misconceptions is enough to be a small book worthy of cocktail party chatter alone. The rest is simply brilliant.

What does Kevin Scullin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He presents this with a "Dicovery Channel" professionalism, delivery, and tone of voice that allows one to lose themselves in the narrative- the sign of a great voice actor. You believe he is the author, due to his immersion and conviction in the role.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Several laugh out loud moments- but many more "Ah-Ha!" moments. At least one "Eureka!" moment guaranteed per listener.

    Any additional comments?

I cannot recommend the listen highly enough. It should be required at the elementary, high school, and college levels. And again 5 years after entering the marketplace. :)

For decades, Fred Burton was a key figure in international counterterrorism and domestic spy craft. As a member of the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service in the mid 1980s, he was on the front lines of America's first campaign against terror. Now, in this hard-hitting memoir, Burton emerges from the shadows to reveal who he is, what he has accomplished, and the threats that lurk unseen except by an experienced, world-wise few. Told in a no-holds-barred, gripping, nuanced style, this behind-the scenes account of one counterterrorism agent's life and career is a riveting listen.

Would you consider the audio edition of Ghost to be better than the print version?

I did not read the print version, however, the accented areas and the pronounciations were something you would not get in a read, so probably.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I am not sure this really applies here, as it is autobiographical.

What three words best describe Tom Weiner’s voice?

    Uninflected, montonous, gravelly

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

The story is what counts here. It is a spellbinding account of real events and people, and dramatic for the times it occurred in and the events portrayed. If you are a fan of cold war and beyond real world workings of counterintelligence this is a must have.

What made the experience of listening to Dark and Stormy Knights the most enjoyable?

The Jim Butcher story was worth the price alone, but this is a delightful- and delightfully performed for the most part, collection of stories. The Harry Dresden story was masterful in writing as well as performance.

One of the early stories is a bit too fantasy for my tastes, and relied upon a confusing list of fanciful beings and items which was very chaotic. Added to the annoying "read", was an annoying voice that made it intolerable (I will let you figure out which one I refer to: Hint: It will be obvious). If it's not on the page it's not on the stage however, as the same voice actress rendered a stunning performance on a later story.

Overall I recommend this collection highly- look at the klinker as an extra that doesn't matter, but don't let it stop you from picking this up- heck, most collections like this have only a couple good stories, this has only one mediocre one!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Harry Dresden. The writing and performace were both 5 star.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Depth of field in his ability to range from believeable woman to Harry himself.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Laughter was common.

    Any additional comments?

A must have in the Short Story Genre collection of Audio Books.

The audio versions of these books bring a depth not found in simple readings, as the pronunciations of the phrases in various languages of the places and phrases is entertaining and enlightening- I recommend them to all of my friends who are fans of the written stories.

What did you like best about this story?

The performance and the writing were equally superb.

What about Phil Gigante’s performance did you like?

The heart and pathos that was communicated by Gigante was amazing, as was his command of the languages spoken.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A powerful and gripping experience of spycraft and the people that suffer in its grasp...
