The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

What did you love best about Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore?

I loved Everything about this book! Wonderful settings, characters with depth & quirkiness, the combination of technology and ancient texts.....

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

There was a continuous gentle undercurrent of excitement, and occasional suspense.

What does Ari Fliakos bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice characterizations were so varied, there was never a doubt 'who' was speaking. He was completely charming, and a fantastic choice for this book. Perfect narration, just perfect.

If you could take any character from Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I could never choose ~ I want to be at a dinner party with ALL of them!! They are all so intriguing and believable. :)

A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horse-drawn carriage in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he's...Dodger. Seventeen-year-old Dodger may be a street urchin, but he gleans a living from London's sewers, and he knows a jewel when he sees one. He's not about to let anything happen to the unknown girl - not even if her fate impacts the most powerful people in England.

Where does Dodger rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was one of the best, for sure. I have always loved Terry Pratchett, so when this showed up at audible, it was an obvious next choice for me. This honest (but often hilarious) look into the desperate situation in London during Victorian times is quite a departure from the Discworld books, indeed. I found it entertaining, insightful, painful and so very heartfelt. All while continuing to be slightly sneaky, bawdy and grimy. It is a fantastic, amazing, wonderful book / narration and I highly recommend it!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Who could resist dear Dodger himself? An almost-honest urchin with a heart of gold and the wisdom of a scholar. He will stay with me for a long time.

Have you listened to any of Stephen Briggs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first Stephen Briggs performance, but it won't be the last! He was brilliant with all of the voices, male and female, and with the general narration overall. He is an extremely talented narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were So many moments in the book that moved me. I think the 'after the end' part, where Stephen Briggs is reading a note from Terry Pratchett himself might have been most moving for me. In the 'afterword' the author talks about his research for this book, and how the conditions depicted were based on factual references from the time, particularly a work by Henry Mayhew (also a character in the novel).

Summer 1924: On the eve of a glittering Society party, by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses, sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, will never speak to each other again....Winter 1999: Grace Bradley, 98, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet's suicide. Ghosts awaken, and memories, long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace's mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks.

Excellent weaving of story lines from past & present. Fascinating insight into the 'days gone by'. Wonderful perspective. Wonderful narration. There was never any doubt which character was speaking. Just a really lovely novel, beautifully written and splendidly read for us. Thank you Kate Morton and Caroline Lee for a truly magnificent story experience.
