I was hoping the main character would be a bit more intelligent in this book than the previous one. But I could not get passed more than 3 and a half hours before I just quit listening to this book. The main character seems very witless, and seems to have no investigative skills for a bounty hunter. Also she doesn't think things through whats over then wonders why she has problems. She's overly secretive and not subtle about it, which causes her problems. She constantly lies to everyone she supposedly cares about and trusts no one except complete strangers. I would not recommend this series if you are looking for a intelligent story that you won't be spending half your time rolling your eyes asking "why are you doing that?"
I was hoping I would enjoy this novel more than I did. I like the genre a great deal, but the main character got on my nerves as she seems so bi-polar. She also seems a bit self delusional as well, blatantly not seeing what's in front of her. Still it was an okay listen, the production and narration was well done. Dina Pearlman did a great job with the voices, and inflections of voices. I'm hoping the 2nd book the main character gets a clue. It was enjoyable enough for me to at least try the 2nd book.
I remember first reading this book over a decade ago, and I fell in love with this series. A must read in my opinion if you like high fantasy and believe there is good in the world, all 3 in the series is phenomenal. The narrator is also a good choice, I did enjoy listening to her as her other narrations (Mystic & Rider by Sharon Shinn).
The other reviewers gushed about how great this book was so I read it. It was okay, but not really great. The sex scenes were hot, but other that that, the story is mediocre and the characters are very stereotypical.
As a vampire fan I did not really like the author's take on the old myth, making them a separate race that feed off each other rather than humans. Instead of vampires, they felt more like aliens or some mystical race of magical beings other than vampires. I understand authors like adding their own personal twists to stories, but this author's version seemed to me like the vamps are called vampires just so you can say this is a vampire book and that will draw a certain fan base (like me) to read it.
Also the main villain was to me, was very blah. I thought the scenes with the antagonist took away from a lot of the story, as it was pretty boring as I waited for the tale to return to the main characters. I know the author wanted to show how evil Mr. X was, but knowing the villain's motives, in my opinion, takes away from any animosity I felt for the villain. He seem more like a wannabe instead of someone you just love to hate because he's so evil type. I think the story would have been more interesting and involved if the protagonists learned more about the antagonist the same time the reader did through the story. As it was, by the end of the book, the main characters fought and defeated the bad guys, not knowing much about what the villain did, or even who he was.
As a love story, it's typical sexy girl meets sexy dark mysterious guy and the hop into the sack and fall madly in love. There are a lot of erotic scenes in the book, so if you like that stuff this is a good book for it.
I did somewhat enjoy the novel, but I am not sure if I will get any of the other books in the series, as I was not very impressed with the first book.
