With the discovery of another life-sustaining planet light years away, there is hope for a chosen few to leave the soon-to-be submerged Earth. Holle Groundwater is one of the candidates, having been trained for this purpose since childhood, when the ships Ark One and Ark Three were being built. But as Holle prepares to endure life aboard the Ark, she comes to realize that her attempt at escape may be more dangerous than trying to stay afloat on a drowning planet.

In the late summer of a long-ago year, a killer arrived in a small city. His name was Alton Turner Blackwood, and in the space of a few months he brutally murdered four families. His savage spree ended only when he himself was killed by the last survivor of the last family, a 14-year-old boy. Half a continent away and two decades later, someone is murdering families again, re-creating in detail Blackwood’s crimes.

I have always enjoyed a Koontz novel. His last name is even the answer to my secret question password retrieval field at times. I listened to this book and really tried to enjoy it. It had it's moments, but overall disappointing. I had to try to finish it. Listen to it understanding that it's not his best (far, far from it), but also not terrible. I wouldn't say it was a waste of time, butttt not a re re read for sure. Koontz has became hit or miss. Sorry Dean, just being honest.

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

This story started out very exciting. It read like three separate books, with the middle dragging almost to a point of giving up on it. If you like lonnnng books that could have been done in half the time, then this is for you.
