  • The Seventh Sinner: A Jacqueline Kirby Mystery, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Elizabeth Peters
    • Narrated By Grace Conlin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

For vibrant, lovely Jean Suttman, the fellowship to study in Rome was the culmination of all her dreams, until she undertook an innocent expedition to the ancient subterranean Temple of Mithra.

Priscilla Pelfrey says: "Kirby More Fun than Peabody"
    "I couldn't finish it."

Elizabeth Peters is an excellent author. Unfortunately, her excessive use of blasphemy in this book was just too much for me. I wish her vocabulary was as captivating as her plots are.

  • A Murder is Announced: A Miss Marple Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 40 mins)
    • By Agatha Christie
    • Narrated By Rosemary Leach

Who would advertise a murder? The ad reads "A murder is announced, and will take place on Friday, October 29th, at Little Paddocks, at 6:30 p.m. Friends, please accept this, the only intimation." Surely it must be a hoax? Clearly it's in bad taste. But when someone really is murdered, Miss Jane Marple, elderly sleuth extraordinaire, gives you the tantalizing pleasure of solving a mystery along with one of the best detectives ever created in fiction.

Amanda says: "One Of The best!"
    "A true classic"

One of Christie's better plots. It is slightly harder to pick up on the key bit of information needed to solve the murder in audible format compared to print, but still worth listening to. The narrator is excellent. She sounds enough like Judi Dench that I looked to see if it was her.

  • Her Royal Spyness: A Royal Spyness Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Rhys Bowen
    • Narrated By Katherine Kellgren

Georgie, aka Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie, cousin of King George V of England, is penniless and trying to survive on her own as an ordinary person in London in 1932. So far she has managed to light a fire and boil an egg... She's gate-crashed a wedding... She's making money by secretly cleaning houses... And she's been asked to spy for Her Majesty the Queen.

Coffee Lover says: "Joy, Joy, Joy!"
"Her Royal Boreness is more like it"

Considering the word "spy" is in the title, I thought this would be intriguing and adventurous. It's not. I'm 4 hours into the book and it is so uninteresting that I have to remind myself to start listening again. I find the main character to be rather flat and her best friend shallow. The most exciting thing so far is several dull conversations about sex. I love a good, clean, cozy mystery, but this is just a snooze in my opinion. As for the narrator, most of the voices are done rather well (especially the grandfather's) but Belinda's is whiny and grating. So much so that I contemplated not listening anymore when she came along. Audible bills this book as a chance to "mingle" with Queen Mary. Unfortunately, she has only been in it for about 10 minutes so far. I'm just not impressed and won't bother with the rest of the series. I'll go back to mysteries written before the 1960's.
