Despite the rivalry of the imperial harem, which has plotted against her from the beginning, Mehrunnisa soon becomes the most powerful woman in the Mughal Empire. She rules from behind the veil, securing her status by forming a junta of sorts with her father, brother, and stepson and by risking all, even her daughter, to get what she wants. But she never loses the love of the man who has bestowed this power upon her.

    Pamela says: "Gold Medal Finalist"
    "Wonderful Writing, Plot AND Presentation"

I can't say enough about this reader; I wish she had more performances. She is perfect for this book (and the other in the series), which is beautifully written.

    A joy to listen to!

    • UNABRIDGED (32 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Susanna Clarke
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble

English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

    David says: "Hang in there!"

Charles Dickens writing magical realism for a modern day audience. smart and elegant with lots of dry wit and ominous, mysterious happenings.

it's worth a read for the quality of the writing alone; the enchanting plot is a bonus.

the narrator is perfectly matched to the text and gives a flawless performance.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

Christopher Allen walker says: "Great Pulitzer Winning novel!"

wonderful narration. it takes a little getting used to, and it's tricky due to the ambiguous gender of the narrator, but it's really been pulled off here. well done!

the novel itself is a real treasure.

  • Peony in Love: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Lisa See
    • Narrated By Janet Song
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

For young Peony, betrothed to a suitor she has never met, lyrics from The Peony Pavilion mirror her own longings. In the garden of the Chen Family Villa, amid the scent of ginger, green tea, and jasmine, a small theatrical troupe is performing scenes from this epic opera, a live spectacle few females have ever seen. Like the heroine in the drama, Peony is the cloistered daughter of a wealthy family, trapped like a good-luck cricket in a bamboo-and-lacquer cage.

    L. Swartz says: "Unusual and excellent book"
    "a lot of fun"

this was a really fun listen; the narration is quite good and the story is a pleasure. a superb bit of light but interesting fiction.

  • The Traveler

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By John Twelve Hawks
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Maya is hiding in plain sight in London. The 26-year-old has abandoned the dangerous obligations pressed upon her by her father and chosen instead to live a normal life. But Maya comes from a long line of people who call themselves Harlequins, a fierce group of warriors willing to sacrifice their lives to protect a select few known as Travelers.

Nicholas Winn says: "Told friends and family"

not a wonderful book to begin with (the writing and plot both leave a lot to be desired, though the concept is fair)...but the narrator pretty much kills it dead.

the presentation is pretty much lifeless.

  • Anansi Boys

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Neil Gaiman
    • Narrated By Lenny Henry

Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

    A. Hawley says: "Beautifully narrated"

this isn't my favorite Gaiman story, but it's very good, and the narration is EXCELLENT.

  • American Gods

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By Neil Gaiman
    • Narrated By George Guidall
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

For the three years Shadow spent in prison, all he wanted was to get back to the loving arms of his wife and stay out of trouble for the rest of his life. But days before his release, he learns that his wife has been killed in an accident, and his world becomes a colder place.

Joseph says: "Amazing, powerful book about America."
"WOW. really really really really really GOOD"

it's smart, funny, complicated, earthy and rich with meaning; it has magic and mystery and romance and intrigue; the narrator is talented and refined (and gives a flawless presentation) and the author is one of that rare breed of modern authors who has found something TRULY NEW to write about, and a distinctive and artful way to write about it.

this is one of those books where you just don't want it to end, and when it does, you wish you could erase it from your memory just so you can repeat the pleasure of listening to it.

i would give it 10 stars out of 5 if i could.

  • Doomsday Book

    • UNABRIDGED (26 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Connie Willis
    • Narrated By Jenny Sterlin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

For Oxford student Kivrin, traveling back to the 14th century is more than the culmination of her studies - it's the chance for a wonderful adventure. For Dunworthy, her mentor, it is cause for intense worry about the thousands of things that could go wrong.

Sara says: "A Haunting First Book in the Series"
    "WELL DONE...but a real bummer"

I listened to this on vacation and the beach, and it promised to be pure, guilty-pleasure ear candy. I was not disappointed by the writing, the concept, or the reading (the narrator is fanTAStic).

However, I would put a warning label on this that the whole second half of the book is (vague spoiler alert) sort of a sinkhole of depressing events. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone looking for a "pick-me-up" or a happily-ever-after type story.

I guess a book about the plague wouldn't be a typical candidate for that anyway, but for history buffs like me, taking a time machine back to the Middle Ages sounds like such a "fun" idea...and this just isn't a "fun" story.

Still, DEFINITELY worth a read...when you're in the right mood for a downer.

  • Kafka on the Shore

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Haruki Murakami
    • Narrated By Sean Barrett, Oliver Le Sueur
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Kafka on the Shore follows the fortunes of two remarkable characters. Kafka Tamura runs away from home at 15, under the shadow of his father's dark prophesy. The aging Nakata, tracker of lost cats, who never recovered from a bizarre childhood affliction, finds his pleasantly simplified life suddenly turned upside down.

Mel says: "Brilliant Meandering--what was in those brownies.."
    "Smart, Magical and Well Performed"

This is a really fresh bit of literature, hard to peg into any particular genre.

I highly recommend it anyone who likes fiction that is whimsical, brainy and a little mystical.

The reader gives an excellent performance of the text. I highly recommend this one!
