  • Night Soldiers

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 18 mins)
    • By Alan Furst
    • Narrated By George Guidall

Widely recognized as the master of the historical spy novel, New York Times best-selling author Alan Furst takes listeners back to the early days of World War II for a dramatic novel of intrigue and suspense.

    "Sleep Aid"

I downloaded this book as a fan of historical fiction, mysteries, as well as military history. Based on the synopsis of the book and other audible readers' reviews, this book should have fed each of my vices.

What I received was a painfully slow story full of under-developed characters and mind numbing, meaningless descriptions. I did, however, find a wonderful use for Night Soldiers; a sleep aid.

  • Nature Girl

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 28 mins)
    • By Carl Hiaasen
    • Narrated By Lee Adams
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Honey Santana, impassioned, willful, possibly bipolar, self-proclaimed "queen of lost causes", has a scheme to help rid the world of irresponsibility, indifference, and dinnertime sales calls. She's taking rude, gullible Relentless, Inc., telemarketer Boyd Shreave and his less-than-enthusiastic mistress, Eugenie, into the wilderness of Florida's Ten Thousand Islands for a gentle lesson in civility. What she doesn't know is that she's being followed by her Honey-obsessed former employer.

Pamela Faber says: "Well worth the wait!"
    "Don't do it!"

I often read reviews that lament the poor quality of the narrator and how they "ruined" the book. Until I listened to this book I thought those people were overly picky, but now I understand. Her attempts to give the characters unique voices is pathetic, and by the middle of the book they all sound the same. The book itself is marginal at best, but add the narrator's inadequacy, and you have many wasted hours.

As I stated, I found the book to be less than average. This is the third title I have read by this author and found it way over the top. I understand he wants to be sarcastic, and it is fiction, but unfortunately he carries it way too far. The author spends a lot of time in his books putting down tourists (even killing them), yet like most people who live in resort areas he tends to forget who pays the bills. I think the author has the same attitude towards his readers as the crusty old man at the gas station who complains about all the tourists ruining his town while he fills up their tanks.

If you are looking for a slow moving, unbelieveable, poorly narrated book, then look no further.

  • Odd Thomas

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By David Aaron Baker

"The dead don't talk. I don't know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn.

    Denise says: "No Doubting Thomas"
    "Boring, at best"

The book starts out promising, with an interesting main carachter, but quickly loses momentum. It was painful to finish, and as I neared the end I realized just how much time I had wasted listening to the book. With so many great books out there, don't waste your time with this one.
