    This magnificent novel is about the murder of a miserly, aged pawnbroker and her younger sister by a radical, destitute St. Petersburg student named Raskolnikov, and the emotional, mental, and physical effects that follow. It is a remarkable masterpiece about a man's turbulent inner life and his relationship to others and to society at large. Dostoevsky explored the human condition on many levels in this great piece, and among the main themes the novel explores is the rather strange theory that criminals have a spiritual need to be punished - that indeed they demand it.

    Would you try another book from Fyodor Dostoevsky and/or Charlton Griffin?

    If it is a better translation. The old Garnett translation has been surpassed. Griffin is an excellent reader.

    Professor Drout brings a world of knowledge and his personal passion to this discussion of Tolkien. He informs and entertains, but never condescends to the listener. The only flaw is the lack of a PDF of the text, which is usually incuded in the Modern Scholar Courses. It woould have been useful for keeping track of the names, and making notes. This course is recommended for Tolkien fans who have some reading knowledge of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, and would like to learn more about Tolkien's scholarly background.

    Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Stephen Perring?

    This book was ruined for me by the poor narration. I quit halfway through because of his mispronunciations, forced speed, and weak, nearly non-existent characterizations. John Lee was good; Tom Sellwood, who did the first three, was excellent.
