More corpse reading and less of the string of unbelievable calamities that seem to beset the protagonist. Also, he is by turns quite clever in haggling and dealing with commerce, and impossibly naive in dealing with everything else. It almost felt like reading one of those horrible gothic novels from the nineteenth century. He nearly entered the 'too stupid to live' category.
The reader was the best part of the book, doing various voices and using a trace of a Chinese accent. One nit I will pick, is that he mispronounced the word 'ochre', using a soft ch, as in 'cherry'.
The story itself had a certain something, with an interesting premise. The performance failed to deliver.
No. It was rife with hokey accents, wooden deliveries and mispronunciations. The French accents sounded more like bad Spanish or Mexican, the Canadian accents were just weird. The American accents were OK, but you'd expect that from Americans. Where one character's voice was described as 'bass', as in low-pitched, the reader said 'bass' as in the fish. Stolichnaya vodka became Stolicknaya vodka. On the whole, I'd expect as much from a high school drama club. The only positive thing I can say about it is that at least nobody had to attempt to voice the opposite gender.
Maybe. Then again, Hollywood would probably just make it worse.
I found the format somewhat confusing, seeming to jump from topic to topic, then revisiting a topic mentioned earlier, etc. That might not be a problem with the print version, but when read from front to back, it is (for me, at least).
The reader is also somewhat problematic. He has plenty of 'melody' to his voice, but a great many idiosyncratic pronunciations, which I find jarring. For instance, 'paraBOla' rather than the usual 'paRAbola'. Also, there are several malapropisms, which could be the fault of the authors, or a misreading by the reader. For instance, 'neuron' when it should be 'neutron' or 'climactic' when it should be 'climatic'. Still, it is worth listening to just for fun.
