"Not difficult to keep track of the characters"
I don't know why some reviewers think this is a difficult listen. Maybe they just have too many other things going on while they listen to audiobooks. Focus people! ; )
It's a very entertaining story and I had no trouble following.
"Yes, you should get this beautiful book"
I mostly got this book because I loved the book cover design and it sounded interesting. And then I started listening and couldn't stop. Seriously, bought it yesterday, finished it today. The book is 15 hours long. The narrator is perfect in every way and the story is unique and beautiful. Loved it.
"The fiction book that wants to be non."
The author, Melanie Benjamin, says what she hopes the reader will take away from her novel is the desire to learn more about the characters. Mission accomplished - I googled the Lindberghs. But, I can't figure out why she didn't just write a non-fiction book. This book wants to be non-fiction. It wants to show you the reality of the sociopathic husband and the doormat wife and that reality kinda sucks.
Here are my thoughts as I listened to this book: "I can't wait until Anne does something crazy, like not make his dinner. Oh wait, crazy things won't happen, this is non-fiction. Wait, it's fiction, why aren't crazy things happening?".
Why, Melanie, why can't Anne win just once?
"What am I missing?"
I just wasn't blown away by this book. Interesting enough story, but I just couldn't really feel any empathy for Cheryl.
"It was not my favorite"
This book was beautifully written, but I was a little bored while listening. I felt detached from the characters and found my mind wandered quite often.
"Smooth"
The smooth language, perfect amount of character detail and interesting enough plot make for a memorable listen. It's the kind of book that grabs you right away and doesn't let go. But, it's not really an intense kind of grab, it's more like a light hug or an arm around your shoulder. I didn't really realize I had been thoroughly intrigued by the story until it was over. Well done.
"Don't miss this one!"
This is the kind of book that grabs your attention and doesn't let it wander. I always know how much I'm enjoying a book by the number of times I have to hit the 30 second rewind button and it didn't get much use during this book.
"Get this book if you weren't raised in a convent."
There's not too much sex. It's not a cheesy romance. It's part love story, part historical fiction and part adventure with a tiny dash of sci-fi mixed in. It's funny and smart too. Seriously, I neglected my three children while listening to this series because it was so good.
And, it's narrated by the best narrator to ever read a book. The best.
"Clever as always"
I adore Jon Ronson and his fantastic, quirky voice.
I would recommend listening to this book as you might a podcast and not straight through as it is more enjoyable in smaller doses.
"Compelling"
If you're reading this review then you are contemplating the purchase of this book. Correct? Just get it. You won't be disappointed.
However, if you (as other readers have) expect the book to "deliver on it's promise" of including "God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit" then you will be disappointed. But, I do urge you to get the book and listen with an open mind.
I find it quite rude to give a negative review and rating to a book based solely on the fact that it does not conform to your set of beliefs. Nowhere in the description of the book does it promise to do so either. It is a well-written and researched book and deserves to be reviewed as such.
Those of you who do purchase the book I ask you to give it a fair review. No need to type out a response, just a click on the stars will do. Thanks!
