There are just not enough novels with 49 year old men who are kind of clever but not terribly good at anything as heros. This is certainly the funniest one in the genre I have ever read. Like the other reviewers I laughed out loud many times.
Plenty happens - there is love, death, problems with the waterworks and literary criticsm. What more can you want?

I sometimes wonder if I have been listening to the same book as other reviewers. This is an ultimately uplifting book about the point at which people break out of destructive behaviors and turn their lives around.
Now that obviously involves delving into the destructive behaviors but since the example given is sex addiction everything has its positive side.
I found it a very funny book. It is completely unreliable on almost everything especially the opening entreaty from the author to stop reading.
If you are easily offended its not for you. If your are annoyed by snowboarder speak...Dude don't do it!
If you enjoy original and irreverent ideas coming at you in twisted but amusing ways get it in your cart!
I bought it because I enjoyed the sample...I think its pretty representative of the whole book so I would recommend you try that, if you enjoy it you will enjoy the whole thing.

I really enjoyed this book, it is written in a very lively and engaging style with very strong characters right through the “supporting cast” which is not always the case in this type of thriller. I particularly enjoyed the very politically incorrect NYPD detective.
One of the themes of the book is that though rape and sexual assault must be very harrowing but the Asst DA finds it too rewarding to let it get her down. The book is written in that way it is very robust and there is lots of good humour without it ever underrating the serious of crimes of this sort.

The plot has lots of interesting twists, I saw some coming form way out there ( is that good or bad?) but others really caught me by surprise.

I’ve not read anything by this author before but I notice there are a couple more available through Audible and after a decent interval I will certainly be listening to them.
One more thing the reading is first rate, great pace, energy and characterisation.

I really like books that transport you to their setting. I felt like I had spent quite a few hours in sweaty Mississippi by the time I had finished this book. Really good writing on the critical scenes where she is attacked ( I don’t think that is giving much away). Anna is an intriguing character and she has a lot to learn as a manager which is very entertaining.

The down side is that I did not really feel convinced by the motive of the villain and the final resolution of the plot but I enjoyed the journey and didn’t feel to let down by the weakish ending on the whodunit front because Anna’s personal story is more interesting and leads somewhere more credible.

I am looking forward to the next one but how I wish Audible made the sequence of a series a bit clearer.

Greene has fallen a bit out of fashion these days but listening to the Comedians reminds me, at least, why he was once thought of as the best living writer in English. The Comedians has pace, great characters and a real sense of place and time. The reading is very fine in the main though I agree with the comment about him being a bit shaky in the Haitian accents. Definitely for all those who appreciate that great writing and layers of ideas should come in an entertaining package with a strong plot.

One measure of really good whodunit is that you should "get it" a satisfying time before it is all spelt out for you. This one really worked for me. It is an engrossing book which got me intrigued from the very first. The main character is suitably flawed but sympathetic in the Bosch/Rebus tradition and the audio book has great atmosphere with music and sounds that add, for once, not distract. The feature I liked the best was the tough but compassionate treatment of the London homeless that is at the core of the book; it treads the tightrope between bleeding heart and bleeding heartless very successfully.
Essentially it's a great, if quite dark, mystery book with a strong plot and well developed characters who really make you care about what is going to happen to them. I don't often take abridgments but at 6 hours this leaves a very full meal of a book which is well worth the credit.

Its been a couple of months since I heard this book and seing the listing again revived the warm feeling of goodwill that pervades this book.
It is episodic but none the worse for that. I particualy liked the story about the when our hero haphazzardly joins a cycle rally.
Don't miss it. It will stay with you.
