"Better than Wolf Hall but not by much."
If you love the intrigue from this era then, as I stated in my review of Wolf Hall, you're better off watching "The Tudors" on Showtime.
Simon Vance did better on the narration than Simon Slater, who made Henry sound like a woman trying to sound like a man.
I would not listen to any more from this author.
"The narrator is annoying me to death!!!"
No. Well, perhaps from the author but not from the narrator!
I'm half-way through this book, having to read it for Book Club. The story is fine... it's the narrator. He starts EVERY sentence up - meaning you can hear it - and ends EACH sentence speaking so low and mumbly you can't hear/understand what he's saying. I would quit listening to it right now if it weren't for book club. I don't have time to "read" it.
"Epic. Tragic. Thought-provoking. Outstanding!"
I originally listened to this book several years ago. Loved it.
Now, I just re-listened in prep for my book club. Loved it even more.
Girls were constantly reminded of how worthless they were - only good for cooking, cleaning and bearing sons. Perhaps women didn't realize it, but love came to them through their friendships with other women. This story is stunning and heart wrenching. Beautifully written.
"Outstanding!"
The sequences of the book are organized and succinctly told, giving the story a great flow. The characters are well developed, without going to the extreme just for words-sake, and am happy to say (possible spoiler alert!) I'm excited and hopeful for Dewey to come back!
This story has so many realistic nuances in today's political realm and is so entertaining. If you even remotely like this genre, this book won't disappoint.
"Better off watching "The Tudors" on Showtime."
Because I have loved watching "The Tudors" on Showtime and the movie "The Other Boleyn Girl," I was eager to listen to Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. Ugh. Was I ever disappointed. This book is boring and tells too much from Thomas Cromwell and other characters I couldn't care less about.
The book introduces Jane Seymour from Wolf Hall but never fully develops her character. Not even in the sequel, Bring Up the Bodies, so what was the point....
The heart of that time was Henry and Anne, who just perched on the periphery of this book.
"Could have been told in fewer words."
The story was interesting but could have been told in 2/3 the time. It was also a bit frustrating that the main character didn't do more to help his case. Having said that, it was a good story with DeMille's usual dry sense of wit.
I always enjoy Scott Brick's narrations.
"No parent wants to think their son...."
Yes. I would listen for the more subtle clues as to what happened in the end.
Great job in portraying each character.
A great read. An unexpected ending.
"Are wolves and humans really that different?!"
Interesting, thought-provoking and real.
Highly recommend this book. Kept my attention and I learned a few things about wolves and how human behavior, with all our emotions and miscommunications, can send us down a path we never imagined.
"One of my favorites!"
Absolutely. Can't wait for Kathleen Grissom to debut her next novel.
Reminiscent of The Help, you become so invested in the characters.
The narration was excellent. Brought the characters to life as if you were living in their world.
"Engaging. Kept my interest!"
Because it's such a long listen and not the normal genre to which I am attracted, I wanted to begin it when I had the time to listen for a good while without interruption. By doing this I grasped hold of the story line and become engrossed. Narration was excellent. Satisfying ending.
