A wonderful story, expertly told & written with characters that you really know bceause they are so well depicted. My first Stegner book & what a remarkable find- this man really knows how to write a compelling story.
The attorney father just wasn't credible for me, the mother & son were both weak characters . The author should have worked harder on developing the characters instead of overusing metaphors. This would be an example of what a formula novel right out of writing class sounds like.
There are so many characters & details that it becomes very tedious unless you are an avid history lover & can keep track of multiple individuals interacting, often with little results. No wonder it took so long to build. Save yourself lots of time & get the PBS video of the making of the Canal which is well done & conveys the story interestingly.
