When someone makes a present of a fer-de-lance - the dreaded snake - to Nero Wolfe, Archie Goodwin knows he's close to solving two apparently unrelated murders. As for Wolfe, he's playing snake charmer in a case more deadly than a cobra and whistling a seductive tune he hopes will catch a killer with poison in his heart.

ShySusan says: "One of the best crime series of all time."
"The first story about my favorite fat detective"
    Overall

If you have never met Nero Wolf and Archie Goodwin this is a good place to start. As all of Rex Stouts mysteries this is a fine tale with a chance to meet fun characters. After you get to know the main characters in this series you begin to enjoy the humor of the interplay between Wolf an Archie as these two incompatibles form an outstanding detective team. I recommend all Nero Wolf mysteries.

Julius Caesar wrote his exciting Commentaries during some of the most grueling campaigns ever undertaken by a Roman army. The Gallic Wars and The Civil Wars constitute the greatest series of military dispatches ever written. As literature, they are representative of the finest expressions of Latin prose in its "golden" age, a benchmark of elegant style and masculine brevity imitated by young schoolboys for centuries.

What did you love best about The Commentaries?

There is no history to match that of the man who was not only there but planned and lived this critical part of Roman history. It helps you understand the logistics of these wars if you have a map of Gaul and France but it is entertaining, even without, to follow this outstanding general, politician and writer as he shapes the world we now live in.

C.S. Forester, creator of the beloved Horatio Hornblower series, takes young readers on an exciting adventure to the shores of Tripoli in North Africa. That's where, more than 200 years ago, the United States was threatened by "pirates" who snatched American merchant ships and imprisoned sailors - and the country's young, untested navy took on the task of fighting the pirates in their home waters.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The civilized world's experience with the Barbary Pirates shows a lesson that is often forgotten in today's international relations and should not be. You can't deal with criminals and terrorists except from a position of strength. Almost every war the U.S. as been drawn into has been following a period when we let our military strength drop. Only then do other countries feel enboldened to try to push us out of the way. This book shows the U.S. at both its worst and best as a leader of freedom and it all true history that has lessons to teach and that need to be remembered.

At key points throughout North America, an invasion force is taking over communications, government, industry, and people's bodies. And the nation is helpless to stop it, because the invaders multiply far faster than they can be destroyed, controlling the mind of every unsuspecting person they encounter. Enter Sam Cavanaugh, a can-do intelligence officer for the United States' most secret service. Cavanaugh is the only man who can stop the invaders. But to do that he'll have to be invaded himself.

Mike From Mesa says: "An old favorite, but poorly narrated"
"Classic SF by one of the best."
    Overall

Heinlein's talent is to develop characters that are so believable that you really feel you know them and care what happens to them and then set them is a science fiction environment and watch them cope. The question here is, are humans tough enough and adaptable enough to survive a first contact with creatures who just don't care what happens to the human civilizations? So far,on this planet, we have crushed or killed any creatures that have offered us any competition. But, are there are other places and other winners who have shown the same drive to win?

Colonel Andrew Keane and his blue-coated soldiers were not the first humans time-space-warped to a world so familiar yet so foreign. Humans abounded on the perverse planet-humans treated like cattle by the alien warrior overlords. Keane's Civil War weaponry defeated the swords, spears and crossbows of his monstrous adversaries.

Dan says: "It’s kinda like MacGyver"
"The Union meets Godzilla the Hun."
    Overall

Well written action and battle with nice character development. You not only are led to understand the motives of the Union soldiers but you also look through the eyes of some of the baddest bad guys you are likely to run into and see from their point of view what makes their actions logical and right by their culture. The humans have to win this one for there is no retreat. It is hard to believe there are worse things than to be dead on a U.S. civil war battle field or even to be a prisoner of war in some place like Andersonville or Point Lookout but on this world there are.

Gaius Petrius Ruso is a divorced and down-on-his-luck army doctor who has made the rash decision to seek his fortune in an inclement outpost of the Roman Empire, namely Britannia. After a 36-hour shift at the army hospital, he succumbs to a moment of weakness and rescues an injured slave girl, Tilla, from the hands of her abusive owner. And before he knows it, Ruso is caught in the middle of an investigation into the deaths of prostitutes working out of the local bar.

I enjoyed this story for its mystery, its characters and its ability to help me understand what life might have been like for the "real" people who lived at the very edge of their civilization. They were faced with the problems of dealing with the locals, superior officers, politics and everyday life. Not to mention murder.

At his death in 1988, Robert A. Heinlein left a legacy that almost single-handedly defined modern science fiction. But one of Heinlein's masterpieces was never finished. In 1955, he began work on Variable Star, a powerful and passionate tale of two young lovers driven apart by pride, power, and the vastness of interstellar time and space. Now, the Heinlein estate has authorized award-winning author Spider Robinson to expand his outline into a full-length novel. And the result is vintage Heinlein.

    Michael says: "BRVO!"
"Some good but the rest weak"
    Overall

I am a Heinlein fan, particularly of all his earlier works - not so much his efforts after Stranger in a Strange Land. This book starts out as a fine story but gets a little lost in the middle and ends up feeling rather contrived. It seems to get to a point where the authors felt that there were enough pages so "let's just tie it all up". You might wish to listen to this story for a last chance to hear form this author.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

    Joshua says: "Wonderful production!"
"One of the best crafted science fiction adventures"
    Overall

This is an outstanding good tale with fine character development, well constructed story line, which blends science fiction, ecology and adventure. If you saw the rather bad Hollywood movie, or marginal T.V series,of this don't give up on this story. The book is a well crafted gem of adventure fiction. The "bad guys" are very bad and the good guys are following a dream of freedom that makes any effort well worth it.
