Tanya Huff is just really *good* at this, even in her earlier books it's possible to find enjoyable characters and an interesting and well thought out story.
Some elements are predictable and spelled out but overall just a fun listen and worth the credit (although it's only 11ish hours and not the 22 it was marked as, this seems like a weird bug audible, because I'm sure I've seen it happen before).
The series isn't perfect and sometimes the perspective focusing on Claire demands actions that seem odd just so that she can witness events.
Claire keeps on being awesome.
I have a sneaky affection for Oliver and I quite liked the way he was handled here.
This was an enjoyable listen, but every so often there were moments when I felt that small tweaks could have made things so much better.
There were some resolutions that happened offscreen or didn't happen at all.
There didn't seem to be a single piece of character or plot development that wasn't driven in some way way by an assault on a woman or girl. Ultimately at least 30% of this book was devoted to torture porn...
There was not a lot in the summary that suggested this would be the case.
Women, even the toughest ones were reduced to damsels in distress and every one of them had a moment of character defying stupidity.
It's not a bad book and there are some fascinating (and terrifying) ideas in it, I just felt that some of the heroine's (and the heroes') reactions didn't ring true.
I also felt like too many of the key scenes relied on 1000 to one chances (or on characters being completely oblivious).
It is definitely worth a listen but in the rapidly growing field of teenage dystopian books, it really doesn't stand out.
The actual prose was ok but the heroine is a selfish idiot (which is weird for someone whose life literally revolved around other people) and the plot got ridiculous.
It started out reasonably well but ultimately it turned into a creepy rape-fest with very few redeeming features.
There are authors who are capable of mixing the serious (even the absolutely awful) with the gloriously frivolous, sadly this author is currently not one of them.
Overall an enjoyable listen (Tanya Huff is talented enough that she is incapable of writing unenjoyable books) but it feels like the resolution could have used something.
Well written, well plotted, amazing characters and very well read, definitely worthwhile!
Seraphina is a fantastic and flawed character and is surrounded by a number of others. The villain to the story was relatively easy to guess but the story isn't really intended as a murder mystery.
Having a smart but flawed heroine.
Amber the wolf shapeshifter who actually makes thought out decisions for the most part.
The 4 bears! They were background characters but they were adorable
Life is a ***** and so is she.
(I don;t think much of tagline writers)
Definitely worth reading, suprisingly lyrical and well-written.
I'm learning to love Holly Black's work (although I suspect Valiant is always going to be my favourite).
Nice mix of stories with a huge range of characters.
