Took a college french class and no one could understand a work I said in French at the end of the class. This helped me say the words and not worry about spelling or grammar. The french have an annoying way of not pronouncing the end of most words and conjugated verbs all sound alike to me. Pimsleur just put them in sentences I could understand then reviewed them often. This worked out so well I eventually bought Phase 1, 2 and 3. Now I can actually carry on a very basic conversation and understand a fair amount of conversation in french. I did listen to each section every day and sometimes repeated the section. French does not sink into your head automatically, but if you just listen and repeat lessons each day it is pretty amazing what sticks. I did dishes, laundry, went to the market or ran errands while listening. Made boring chores more interesting and learned basic French.

Have you ever wondered how the lives of great composers-especially when set against the social, political, and cultural context of their world-influences their music? After listening to this perceptive series of eight lectures on the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven, you will likely find that you hear his work in an entirely different way, your insight informed by new knowledge of how Beethoven was able to create masterpieces from the crises of his life. You'll learn about the years of progressive hearing loss-ultimately to produce total deafness-and the understandable agony and rage such a fate would bring upon a composer. About his deep depression over the end of his relationship with the woman he calls his Immortal Beloved. About his pathological hatred of authority, his persecution complex, even delusional behaviors. But you'll also learn how each of these crises, and many others, served to drive Beethoven inward, to reinvent himself and redeem his suffering through art, creating disruptive works of profound passion and beauty that reinvented the nature of musical expression in the Western world.

I like Beethoven's music and was eager to learn about his life. The lecturer is funny and excited about telling you about Beethoven's life. You get tidbits of his music which illustrate the lecture. This is a lecture but it is presented like a story from Beethoven's parents to the end of Beethoven's life. Not at all dry.

Not too long ago, there was no coming back from death. But now, with revolutionary medical advances, death has become just another serious complication. As a young medical student, Dr. David Casarett was inspired by the story of a two-year-old girl named Michelle Funk. Michelle fell into a creek and was underwater for over an hour. When she was found she wasn't breathing, and her pupils were fixed and dilated. That drowning should have been fatal. But after three hours of persistent work, a team of doctors and nurses was able to bring her back.

This book makes you realize that death may not be what it appears to be. People that are dead, without breath, pulse or body temperature, come back to life. You realize how much we have learned about the body and death and how much we don't know. Whether people are dead has been a question since medicine was little more than guesswork. Some of what you know or a great deal of what you know may be out of date. I was suprised at many of the things in this book and had some definite learning experiences.

Dish up the red meat, eggs, and whole milk! In this well-researched and captivating narrative, veteran food writer Nina Teicholz proves how everything we've been told about fat is wrong. For decades, Americans have cut back on red meat and dairy products full of "bad" saturated fats. We obediently complied with nutritional guidelines to eat "heart healthy" fats found in olive oil, fish, and nuts, and followed a Mediterranean diet heavy on fruits, vegetables, and grains. Yet the nation's health has declined. What is going on?

Read several books on this subject, food, from veganism to all protein. Was a vegetarian at one time and have since gone the other way. Since neither vegetables or meat are a religion with me, I decided on the food that made me feel good. This book explains why meat, with its fat is good for you. After experimenting, I agree with the author because I feel better, my memory is better, glucose levels are better and not hungry all the time. This is not a diet book, just a book that explains why fat may not be the devil and why vegetables may not be angels.

Ten years ago, an FBI investigation was about to expose a scandal in the art world that would have been front-page news in New York and London. After a trail of fake paintings of astonishing quality led federal agents to art dealers, experts, and major auction houses, the investigation inexplicably ended, despite an abundance of evidence. The case was closed and the FBI file was marked “exempt from public disclosure”. Now that the statute of limitations on these crimes has expired and the case appears hermetically sealed shut by the FBI, this audiobook, Caveat Emptor, is that artist, Ken Perenyi’s, confession.

Not sure I believed every word, but it is a good story of an art forger. Not sure that he could pull off the forgeries today with all the technology, but who knows, maybe he could. The book takes you through a brief childhood and then right into his teens as he began his first steps into forging famous pieces of artwork. Made me wonder how much hanging on the walls of museums are real and how many may be forgeries. Liked the book, the story and the narrator.

Good story about a cold blooded killer. Lots of profanity, but within the context of how the thieves, drug dealers, mafia members and the like probably speak. Hard to believe that the Ice Man could look so normal and be so abnormal, killing around 200 people. Law inforcement at the time looked for patterns to help identify suspects and this man varied his technique, leaving no pattern. The Ice Man was clever, suspicious and a master of his craft, killing. Without the unrelenting work of one cop, the Ice Man would have probably retired and died of old age without a trace.

If you love football you will like this book. If you are not a football fan and just looking for coaching tips, forget it. This is a well written, well performed version of a bunch of old football guys with pot belly's at the bar re-hasing old football trivia. If I edited out all the old stories that had nothing to do with coaching, the book might be a page long. Suffered throuch 3 chapters and couldn't stand one more word. This is not the education of a coach, just a collection of things about some coaches, the plays they called, who gets the best draft players, growing up as a kid of some coach. I wanted coaching information from the book and there wasn't any.

God gave us emotions to experience life, not destroy it! Lysa TerKeurst admits that she, like most women, has had experiences where others bump into her happy and she comes emotionally unglued. We stuff, we explode, or we react somewhere in between. What do we do with these raw emotions? Is it really possible to make emotions work for us instead of against us? Yes, and in her usual inspiring and practical way, Lysa will show you how.

This book is probably perfect for someone with the same problems and reactions and probably young. I am just too old for this book. I wanted to tell this person to grow up for God's sake and stop acting like an out of control pre-teen. When she files off into a rage over a little thing, it is a reaction we recognize as the straw that broke the camel's back. I just couldn't get very far in this book to find out if it ever got better or if she was just going to flop on the ground like a carp over every little thing. Self absorbed without coping skills and how she reacts sums up the book. Yes, I couldn't stand it and tried not to let the horrible person portrayed want to grade this with no stars.

Enjoyed this book very much. Makes you want to think about what you might do in similar circumstances. Makes you wonder if the characters in the book acted the way your friends and aquaintances might act or respond in the same situation. Maked me think about how much we depend on technology and how much most of us don't know about the things we use everyday like plumbing, lights, heat and the cars we drive. There is an empathy with the main character who's perspective changes as he grows old. Liked the book very much.

At first I thought this was a little on the slow side and not like most novels that dance right along to the end. There is nondescript music in the background, which is different. After awhile the slower pace was really nice. Unlike a novel where you wonder who did it or how it will end, I pretty much know how this book starts and ends. Truly the saying about it is all about the journey is true in this case. Enjoyed just listening and letting the book unfold as opposed to sections and stories being deliverd by a Pastor or in Suday School. Really didn't realize what and how much was in there having never really sat down and read any of the books from beginning to end much less the entire bible. Thought this was a great experience.

When you finish the book you can't completely read everyone and avoid being taken advantage of or lied to, but your in a much better position after reading the book. Unless something is glaringly wrong with a person, I pretty much accept whatever people are telling me. This is why I don't buy a car by myself or sign contracts that could do harm. After reading this book you may pay more attention and mentally ask a few more questions unthought of before. If you need to figure out if your being lied to you will have some idea of what to look for and what to ask. Enjoyed this book mainly because it had information I could use and told me many things I never knew. Trying to spot a liar? This will give you some insight.
